Hi all,

Anyone have any clue what this is? Both the standowner and I were perplexed at what it could be...

It's from Kem Kem, Morocco.

(Unfortunately, I can't post more pics, in case needed, because I didn't buy it... I somehow have the feeling I'm gonna regret not having bought it!)

I am curious to see what this is!

Max

It looks like a tilly bone from a fish.

Ah ok. Thanks!

What exactly is a "tilly bone" though? As in what part of the fish is it?

There was a nice discussion on tilly bones here...

There are more threads on TFF that talk about them.

Agree with ynot, have not seen one from the KK

Ok. Do you think that it is a rare thing in Kem Kem? Or is it just rarely seen on the market because there is little demand for them?

From what I've seen at shows, like the one at Tucson, the Moroccan vendors in the tents will sell anything and everything they find.   I've have not seen these before possibly because I just have not been observant enough, never paid attention to that form or they just may be not be common.  Don't know...

Ok. Well it could be a combination of both: not very common (after all Kem Kem isn't known for its marine deposits!), and not wanted by most people.

Yes as troodon says they will sell anything they have and I have never seen one from this region before nice acquisition.

That's what it reminded me of.

A pterosaur brain.

But surely it couldn't be..............?

The lack of symmetry between the lobes would argue against that. (Wouldn't it?)

Before tilly bone was suggested my first thought was braincast as well. But I think ynot has a point that it doesn't have the right symmetry. There also seems to be a lack of nerve attachments. So I don't think it's an actual braincast.

 @Al Dente @Tidgy's Dad @ynot @caldigger @LordTrilobite

thanks for the extra replies!

I also doubt that this is a brain endocast, because indeed it isn't perfectly symmetrical (as can be seen in this picure, one of the two "bulbs" is slightly bigger than the other). Also, as I have held it in my hand (and therefore have a better 3d image of it in my mind) I know that it isn't exactly symmetrical.

So fish tilly bone, or 'silly bone', still seems to be the best match. :)

Just out of curiosity, how can you see that? As in what are the features that show nerve attachments?

Okay. :dinothumb:

Stupidly though, I didn't buy it... But the seller and I were really curious to find out what it was, so that's why I posted pics of it here :)

Is it bone? From the photos I’m not seeing anything that looks like bony texture. I would expect to see it on the broken surfaces at each end.

Here are some examples of some brains of birds, crocs and pterosaurs. As you can see there are lots of little thingies and protrusions on the bottom. These are all sorts of nerves for various functions. If the specimen you showed was a brain endocast, I'd expect there to be either these infills for nerves or broken off surfaces.

Are you sure this is from Kem Kem? I was at a fair today with the same seller and I only saw one from Khouribga.

It also doesn't look very much like Kem Kem.
