What would be the best general all around informative fossil book to date, or what might be considered a base knowledge data set?

Fossils: The Key to the Past by Richard Fortey

Prehistoric Life,  by DK

I have and like both of them for general knowledge, but if you have a specific field or area you are interested in you will need to supplement them with either national publications or academic publishing

You should check the "Fossil Literature" category of this forum because someone is always asking about recommendations for books whether general interest or particular group.  It's not a lot of pages and you will find some book reviews as well.

The book previously mentioned by DK, "Prehistoric Life: The Definitive Visual History of Life on Earth" is amazing.

It is a steal at about $20.  Everything is lavishly illustrated!

This book has been mentioned before.  This is the book I started with.  35 short years ago.

Thank you! She loves dinosaurs, which has also inspired me to learn more about them. I believe it's probably going to become a strong interest for the remainder of my life. I also thank this forum for my increased interest in fossils. This is an amazing platform for connecting people with similar interests! I am sure the book will be good for her and I! Thank you again!

Try to get this one,the 1968 edition.

And then keep in mind its age.

Covers all the relevant bits in an accessible lucid style

A bit more hands on(and extremely informatively illustrated) is:
