Some finds from my winter collecting

Its been a long time since Ive posted any find on here, so I thought Id show some of what I collected during this past winter.

I took a trip to the Silurian of Tennessee to collect with a friend and did pretty good. This was my first time collecting Silurian fossils.

These are from the Brownsport Group.

I'll start with the sponges

Astraeospongia meniscus a fairly common sponge, I collected several.

Next up is a neat little Brachiopod.

brach.thumb.jpg.b7637a58db371f81e6e890a62cb9d8dc.jpg

Machaeraria sp.

And now enchinoderms.

Calyx of the crinoid Lampterocrinus tennesseensis

Another first for me...a cystoid! Caryocrinites ornatus

and another!

troost.thumb.jpg.87eddf2313fd630b5c262eb40dd5e747.jpg

A nice blastoid -  Troosticrinus reinwardi

Heres a shot showing the complete ones I found.

group.jpg.5f35e5082e64ea0c97cb8ac0807c6b58.jpg

The two large objects on the top left are sponges. The items with the branches may be bryozoans (one has a stem wrapped around it.) The crinoid cups to the right are Parapisocrinus sp.  And the item by the penny is a tiny Leptaena sp. brachiopod (another first!)

And now for my sole arthropod find.

trilo_pyg.jpg.b17e23b5c18256fc8c0a5aae1f66d704.jpg

The surface is very rough, but it seems there is a mold under that. I may try to uncover it. The pygidium is folded down ninety degrees to the rest of it. Not sure as to id at this point. But it seems to be mostly there.

I forgot to photograph the corals I found on this trip so I will add those this weekend.

About a month ago I found myself very early for work so I decided to stop at the Pennington formation ( Upper Mississippian) for a quick hunt. I didnt keep much but I did snag this partial Deltodus affinis tooth.

Thats all for now, thanks for looking.

Beautiful! I especially like the calyxes and the shark.

I've yet to collect in the Brownsport.  Those are some great echinoderms and sponges, and the brachiopods are pretty fantastic too.

I adore those echinoderms :envy:

And the tiny Leptaena is so sweet.

Those are some cool-looking blastoids - much more elongated than the ones I've acquired!  And the cystoids...wow!!!

The cystoids are really neat! So mathematically precise. I like the sponges too as I have never found anything quite like that. Very nice collection. :)

Neat little bottom dwellers!

Every single fossil you see is a miracle set in stone, and should be treated as such.

Thanks everyone. Yeah, those early echinoderms are neat and a little weird. Plus, upon looking at the first pic of the sponge, I notice a tiny high spired gastropod in the upper right that I never noticed before..cool!
