They went through the window screen (STH)

Hey Hi Y'all,

I have been searching some very fine (nano) matrix from Shark Tooth Hill.

The matrix went through the window screen but not the "grease splatter" screen.

I have not taken any pictures with My scope yet, but thought I would show a "teaser" to peak some interest...

My finds so far.

Largest pieces are about 1 millimeter.

I've no idea what sort of teeth, scales and bones they are, but there's a shed load of fun stuff in there!

That's great. :)

Your micro matrix is awesome, Tony. When I finally get finished cataloging the Merritt Island micros, I will get back to exploring my stash of STH. :)

What a rich diversity of fossils represented by the STH matrix!

Looking forward to seeing more, Tony. :)

Thanks for the picture Tony, otherwise i would not be able to see them.  How do you take such a good picture?  Ive tried to take pics of very small stuff but they almost always come out blurry.

Yea, this is mostly true with these, but some look like they have been sandblasted with a rough grit.

My pleasure!   A cheap point and click. It helps to brace Your arms to minimize the camera movement.

I hope to be able to take some close up pictures within a few days.

is that a little six-gill tooth near the top on the right?

No, it is a Heterodon anterior tooth (if I got the right tooth).

Really nice specimens!  I know how time consuming and tedious it can be searching the very fine matrix.  However, when you find a lot of really nice specimens like you did, it is definitely worth the effort.

Thanks Marco. It is time consuming, much more so than the normal micro matrix. It is fun to find so many neat pieces.

I am really just trying to find some shark dermal denticles though.

Cool! Think about all the people who miss these little treasures.

Thanks.

I doubt there are many people that have the patience to sort this type of matrix.

It takes Me at least 1 hour to go through a tablespoon of matrix. (there is around 30 hours represented in the picture.)

I used a .4 mm sieve on a good amount of STH matrix and found lots of ray dermal denticles but not a single shark or ray placoid scale.  I saw a placoid scale posted from STH here on TFF but think they are pretty rare in STH matrix.  Everyone uses different terminology for these.  See the specimens below from the Eocene of SC for what I'm calling a placoid scale and a dermal denticle based upon Welton 1993.  Placoid scales are less than 1 mm in size.

Dermal denticles are basically enlarged bulbous to thorn like placoid scales and are usually found along the midline of the back and tail of many rays.  Placoid scales cover the entire external surface of a shark.  Placoid scales in most rays are scattered sparsely and unevenly across the upper surface of the head, body and pectoral fins.  Welton 1993

I found both types of the placid scales in this matrix. Also found some that are in between the two shapes You posted here.

Wow, very nice material indeed!  At 1.0 mm. you may get some of the larger forams and ostracodes.  At 0.5 mm. you would get a lot more.  STH is famous for beautifully preserved diatoms also, but you would have to get down to about 0.1 mm.  I have a large number of diatom strew slides from STH, and they also contain silicoflagellates in good numbers.  One of the truly great localities for microfossils, as you are discovering!  Looking forward to more images...........
