Ichthyosaurus bones in slate?

Hi,

I saw this slate from Holzmaden,Germany, where many many ichthyosauruses remains have been found, online being sold as « ichthyosaurus bones » Are they really bones? I can see some possible structure but I’m not sure...

I never saw any 2D bones like that in a slate.

What do you think? Here are the picture I have. Is it rare if it is???

Regards

I know this thin sections from Holzmaden. Here are some examples:

On your piece I can definitely see a bone but it looks a bit strange ....

Maybe @Trahho can help here ...

Yes, it'll be bone, but I don't think you could say for sure it's from an ichthyosaur.

Just the most likely candidate, perhaps.

Cool.

Its a good start. If it’s bone and it’s from Holzmaden, can it be something else than ichthyosaurus?

Yeah, plesiosaur, crocodyliform or big fishy are also possible.

Any attempt to place a name with these fragments is just a guess.

If it's an ichthyosaur, and I think that's pretty likely, I'm guessing the mass on the left is a cross-section of the lower jaw.

You regularly see ichthy vertebrae sections here in the U.K.  I’ve always wondered why, study, damaged externally so not worth prepping or sellers to earn more from one vert. They do look pretty cool, not that I have one

Sometimes these are prepped this way if they are heavily pyritized and are too risky/time-consuming to prep in the round.

I agree Carl. Lots of pyrite ammos and marine reptile stuff here, my pen can’t handle. Out with the tile saw then bench grinder.
