Cretaceous mystery cross-section

Recommended Posts

No clue on this 2-inch (5cm) mystery invertebrate in a cross-section of rudist-bearing Cretaceous limestone. Origin unknown, since the photo is from a Chicago CTA station, not a proper outcrop.

Any insights appreciated! but please provide your reasoning or evidence.

Those look like rudists. The cetral one might be a rudist valve in cross section, deformed / fractured / imploded due to the geological stress. The radiating patterns might be pallial canals.

Thank you so much! Maybe not Plagioptychus but certainly close. Wow, what a dazzling bivalve cross-section.
