pefty
No clue on this 2-inch (5cm) mystery invertebrate in a cross-section of rudist-bearing Cretaceous limestone. Origin unknown, since the photo is from a Chicago CTA station, not a proper outcrop. Any insights appreciated! but please provide your reasoning or evidence. abyssunder
Those look like rudists. The cetral one might be a rudist valve in cross section, deformed / fractured / imploded due to the geological stress. The radiating patterns might be pallial canals. excerpt from J. M. Pons et al. 2017. Campanian and Maastrichtian plagioptychid rudists (Hippuritida, Bivalvia) of the Chiapas Central Depression, southern Mexico. pefty
Thank you so much! Maybe not Plagioptychus but certainly close. Wow, what a dazzling bivalve cross-section.
