Fish Fossil

Mattodon

Recommended Posts

It has been a while since I have been online.

So this is one of those very unhelpful posts where I know very little about this fossil's origin. It was purchased in South Africa and the slab is very well preserved. I am hoping this is not a fabricated fossil because the detail is exquisite.

This is also a chance to show off my new Nikon D810 camera.

I will answer any questions to the best of my ability.

Looks a bit like Dastilbe from Brazil, but not sure the anal fin is right.

Pretty close match I would say! I am inspecting the anatomy of the dorsal and pectoral fins, as well as the top of its head. Thank you so much!

Yup, certainly a better match.

What do you think of the preservation of this specimen?

The light's a bit bright so it's difficult to tell. Obviously there's that nasty break through the middle, but otherwise it looks okay.

But not nearly as nice as the others posted here! :)

It's pretty good. Missing some coloration of some of the localities, (so not great) but overall, a nice fossil.

I was lucky enough to snag a couple of nice specimens a while back for a song.

Sometimes those deals do come along.:)

So what did you sing?  Maybe "Hallelujah" (just the chorus) would have been an appropriate choice.

Here are my two. Each are only about 4cm long. I think I only paid a couple of dollars for these with free shipping.

The second one here is shot through my glass display case ( too difficult to remove for a picture) so not as clear a pic. They look much better in hand.
