Hey all

I bought this Emuellidae balcoracania from ebay, which turned up today and it looks awesome!

I'd like to know what you think of it

Wow really nice purchase!

For it to be absolutely stunning,it would need a bit of a prep.

But it’s cool even without.

Cheers

:fistbump:

If it needs any prep at all, it's not much. Maybe a little along the left side. I'm sure someone with the right tools/experience would be able to handle it easily despite the size.

To me the back looks suspicious (read: fabricated), but the seller's other Emuellidae looked real so I hope this one is too

Can we get a top down shot, rather than an oblique angled shot?

I've cropped your photo, and worked on the contrast.

It looks like it may have been a molt, so the pygidium is kind of disarticulated, and bunched up against the thorax.

I see no reason to think anyone would fabricate any part of a 1cm trilobite.

That's the top down shot - with flash.

That is the bottom - note the discolouration and white substance

If you're not familiar with Emuellidae, the 'pygidium' area is actually quite bunched up normally. Here's a pictorial diagram - http://trilobites.info/emuelloideaguide.htm.

Bear in mind however the stone was wrapped in toilet/tissue paper and may have caused the white stringy substance

Looks legit to me.

White stuff is probably mineral staining.

It looks genuine to me, and a nice acquisition considering the site is closed to collecting now (or so I understand).

By the way Emuellidae is the family name, not a genus.  Balcoricania is one of the genera in the Emuellidae, not a species name (see the link you posted earlier).  So the name for this specimen should be Balcoricania sp. unless you care to ID it to species.  At any rate Emuellidae bacoricania is scientifically incorrect as a genus/species combination, which is how it is written.

I think it's a dailyi (the listing said so), I also think it's the only species in Balcoracania. (EDIT: Yes, it is. )

Quote

B. dailyi is the only known species in this genus (i.e., the genus is monotypic).[2]

While researching this just now, I found out that not only do Balcoracania come from Kangaroo Island, but also from the Flinders ranges, at Balcoracana Creek, at Lake Frome. https://www.google.com.au/maps/place/Balcoracana+Creek/@-30.9720062,139.2844905,10z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x6a931399763472f1:0x9fddf6a4daeffb84!8m2!3d-30.990511!4d139.5929467

From Wikipedia

Quote

The genus name is derived from Balcoracana Creek in the Flinders Ranges, one of the sites where fossils of Balcoracania were collected. The species epithet dailyi is in honor of Dr. B. Daily, of the Geology Department, University of Adelaide.[1]

To me this means you could still go there and try to find some, unless this site, as well as Kangaroo Island, has been made inaccessible to the public.
