Zesus
Hey guys! Found this on my property again. (Menlo Park, CA) I no longer assume anything haha but I think this is a bone, possibly a rib? It is slightly over 3 inches long, and 1 inch wide If it is, is there anyway to tell what it's from, or at least generally speaking? or how old it might be? Like within the past 100 years? ? I really have no idea about these things... As always thanks for your help and patience with a newb!

Tidgy's Dad
Yes, it is a bone, maybe a rib. I think quite modern, not a fossil. Try the flame test, burn it and see what it smells like, if it smells bad, it's probably not a fossil, if it doesn't smell it is one. Life's Good! Tortoise Friend. Auspex
A rib fragment, certainly mammal, possibly bovine. Zesus
Awesome, thanks!! Yes, I don't think it's very old. And yup, it smells almost like burning plastic when i hold flame under it for some time. Could it possibly be from a horse? I found an extremely old horseshoe in the same area, still looking for the other one... heavily rusted, wish i had a way to see if there were any markings or details on it that could tell me more about its origins. Only been one owner previous here since the house was built in 1914 and they have confirmed they never had horses... Before then it was just missionaries and Ohlone Indians.. Thanks for your relies!
