Help with Identifying Florida Fossils

Mesohippus

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I was hunting for sharks' teeth around Venice Beach/Caspersen Beach last week, and along with finding a bunch of shark teeth, I found some other fossil-looking stones.  I'm not sure what kind of fossils they are, or if they even are fossils, so I'd like some help identifying them!

All of them are quite hard and most are fairly shiny.

It has a sort of "hole" or concavity in one end which you can see from the second photo.  It also has a bit of a crack on the underside, as you can see from the last photo.

This one is fairly porous/pockmarked looking, and has grooved lines.

The next looks pretty much the same as the previous one, but I thought I would include photos anyway.

Pretty much the same as the last one; porous.

This next one is very interesting to me; it has quite a few cracks and even has a hole all the way through!

I suspect that this one may be just a rock; pretty much the only characteristic that makes me think that it could be a fossil is the color.

I'm thinking that this one is probably a normal (albeit strange looking) rock too...

This one is a bit pockmarked/porous.  If this one actually is a fossil, it seems like it would have to be pretty worn, since I don't really see any definite shape!

Sorry, I know that was a TON of photos!!  :D

Thanks for the help!

Most of this is going to be unidentifiable beyond chunk-o-bone. #1 Looks like it might be section of vertebra. #4 I would say us a bit of Mammoth tooth.

Thanks for your insight!  Do most of them look like some type of bone, not just random rocks?

Most do. I can't really tell on 5 &6, pictures get too blurry when enlarged.

2&3 I'd wire wrap, stick around my neck and call it good.

Oh, cool!  It was my first real fossil hunt, so I'm so excited I found a few fossils besides my shark teeth!
