No, if you look closely you'll see the discovery crack. It has been touched up a bit with shoe polish, however. Tim, dish on your secret. aeon.rocks
I know it's a joke, but you know what's sad, you don't realize most Moroccan preparators and sellers (that I know) are just as honest and professional as some sellers and preparators in USA, probably even more. aeon.rocks
Most of fakes available online are from resellers, bad apples in USA too, who know very well what they sell:

There are also those who don't know what they are buying, and they are ultimately the ones who are scammed, by both the sellers and the manufacturers. aeon.rocks
Sure, but manufacturers are usually honest about what they produce and price accordingly. A world without reproductions would be nicer, but it's a way to afford otherwise expensive specimens, i.e. in museums too. Problem is not in Morocco, a lot of real trilobites comes out each year and most Moroccan sellers are very professional, a lot of cheap junk comes out too, but the main problem are greedy resellers, selling those 1$ copies as it was the real thing! I get that this is obviously a topic you feel strongly about, but please watch your language here. aeon.rocks
Quote a topic you feel strongly about Sure, I don't like people getting scamed by "reputable sellers", if the wrong people take the blame! It's easy to say Moroccans brought the bad reputation on themselves, but the fact is the real scam artists are among some resellers in USA (and EU) and it's time people realize that. I've seen a fair share of resellers buying cheap fossils from Morocco and reselling for 2x-10x the price. It's usually the same story about fake trilobites, buy a cheap reproduction and resell it for profit, it's naive to think experienced resellers (selling fossils for years) don't know what they sell... Kane
Yes, there are unscrupulous sellers all over the world, and it transcends nationality. No matter what someone chooses to buy, from where and whom, caveat emptor applies. I just don't want this topic to degrade into a "nation x is more/less honest in the trilobite trade than nation y" as that is not helpful. ...How to Philosophize with a Hammer
aeon.rocks
I agree, that doesn't help anyone, it's not meant in that way, just as perhaps a helpful reading for any new collectors.

The title essay illuminates Morocco's long-running tradition of creating souvenirs for the tourist trade. This cottage industry is why Morocco has a reputation as a risky source for fossils. The country is blessed with wondrous fossils, but you have to know what you are doing or you could wind up with worthless knickknacks, through the efforts of unscrupulous resellers. No country is exempt from fraud in this respect, but Morocco and China are famous for it.
