Nimravis Posted April 7, 2018 Share Posted April 7, 2018 So Thursday afternoon i drove 3 1/2 to the Clarion Hotel in Iowa City, Iowa so I could be up bright and early for the start of the show. Like Tucson and other show locations, there is a Hotel Show that takes place inside the Clarion on Thursday thru Saturday nights. I have to admit that I had more fun at the Hotel Show versus the couple hours that I spent at the actual show today. I would guess that there were maybe 30 rooms that were open and that contained mostly fossils, but some minerals. Not all of the vendors at the hotel participate in the actual show. With that said, I was really disappointed in the amount of vendors that showed up today for the show, but I did hear that there was some show taking place on the East Coast, and many of the vendors went there. My favorite piece was this large slab that measures 14 1/2" by 11 1/2 " by 1 1/4" mounted on a wood stand. It is a 6 track slab of Permian Coconino Sandstone from Arizona of Laoporus sp. I picked this large piece up for a whopping $20.00. After I left the show, I continued into Iowa to collect Isorthoceras sociale Cephalopods in Graf, Iowa. It looked like there were some decent prices in there too. I'm actually in Iowa right now but I'm not going to be able to swing down there. Wrangellian Posted April 7, 2018 Share Posted April 7, 2018 Wow.. Wish I could attend a 'fossils only' show (even if there are a few rocks/minerals). Those crinoid plates are spectacular. So you can do good work using primitive tools! Those rough Moroccan jobs can't be blamed on the lack of proper equipment! Where can I get me a Permian track plate like that for $20?? The prices were good and at the hotel one dealer had super cheap prices- but he was not selling at the show, so unless you stopped by the hotel at night, you would not had seen them. I agree- I saw that was really surprised- never did see anyone by them. I also saw some of the same items from last year.
