A bit of luck in the Aalenian

Ludwigia

Recommended Posts

I decided to try my luck again at one of my old Aalenian spots in the Wutach valley last week and it panned out this time. I'd been there a couple of weeks ago without much success, so I decided to try to follow the horizon this time in the hopes of finding a pristine exposure. This necessitated a lot of digging and delving, and was a bit of a challenge for my sense of orientation, but I finally was able to localize two exposures which look like they could be producing some interesting finds for some time to come.

I've been busy the last few days doing some commission work, but I finished that off this afternoon, so now I can get down to working on these finds. Here's what I brought home with me.

At the bottom left of the second crate is a larger ammonite which I managed to get done quickly today since there wasn't much matrix at all to remove. Here's the finished product.

Staufenia discoidea? 12cm.

More to follow as time goes on.

Roger, you are a lucky man. So many ammonites, so little time!

Just eyeballing them, I can tell they'll make great prepped specimens!:ammonite01:

Sounds tantalizing... I am always excited when I have a spot that looks likely to produce for some time to come.  :1-SlapHands_zpsbb015b76:

It's a great feeling, but the proof is in the pudding isn't it?

Well, here it is. Turned out that there were a couple of hitchhikers aboard. All Ancolioceras opalinoides.

I tackled the one to the left of it in the crate as well. There's a piece of ammo on top of it which I had to glue back on. Nice 3-dimensional multiblock with Staufenia sehndensis and Ludwigia haugi (the small one) ammonites and a couple of little Myophorella formosa bivalves.

Some close ups of the L.haugi. Love the spines on these inner whorls.

Thanks for the laurels, everyone. I am quite happy with the quality of the finds this time around, so it makes preparing them all that more inspiring.

It's nice to have a whole day at your disposal. The last two above were done this morning, then my wife and I took a brisk hike through the vineyards overlooking the Lake of Constance, had a tasty meal in Meersburg and then I got back to the prep bench for the rest of the afternoon. The first one is a multiblock with Ancolioceras opalinoides. Top left 2nd crate. 17cm. long.

A Staufenia discoidea. 10cm. 2nd crate middle right.

And a relatively uncommon Brasilia baylii. 4.5cm. Bottom left 2nd crate.
