NJ Cretaceous Unknown

I found this in my early collecting days (late 90s, early 00s) in one of the typical Monmouth County Cretaceous stream. The texture doesn't at all say bone to me, but that notch has me wondering.

I think you are right, it's not bone but a river worn rock.

The notch is caused, i think by a weakness running through the piece, you can see where a crack continues down from the notch in the top picture. This crack has caused some of the material to fall out or be more easily eroded leaving the notch.

There may be a slim chance that it is a piece of a coiled cephalopod steinkern. The notch being the eroded remains of a septa.

Confidence level of the ID is very low however.

Looks like some Dinos lost their frisbee :P. I don’t see bone either. Probably just a worn river rock with more of it eroded out along a weakness creating the notch as others have said.

Unfortunately, we get a lot of these suggestive rocks in the brooks. I agree with others, not bone.
