Species (or is that pushing it)? Besides fossils, I collect roadcuts, Stream beds, Winter beaches: Places of pilgrimage. Genus? Species (or is that pushing it)? Just using the thumbnail, the tooth appears to be a symphyseal tooth from a cow shark. Ooops! Right! It's not a symphyseal tooth, but is an upper lateral. Northern Sharks Posted February 15, 2008 Share Posted February 15, 2008 I believe it's an upper jaw tooth, not a symphyseal, from a cow shark. The most likely candidate is Notorynchus primigenius, but there are a couple of Hexanchus species it could be as well. PaleoRon Posted February 15, 2008 Share Posted February 15, 2008 The tooth is an upper jaw lateral N. primigenius, 7 gill cow shark. Calvert formation, lower middle Miocene. I have attached a Pic of 2 symphesial teeth of the same species for reference. Dark tooth is Calvert fm. Scientist's Cliffs, Chesapeake Bay. Light tooth is Pungo fm.
