Stumper Game

After some time out for a small unpleasantness, I'm back with another summertime stumper. The partial jaw is 5 inches long, I surmise the complete jaw would be 9-10 inches long but since I've never seen a complete fossil one, who knows. Showing the other side would not give you any more to go on. I'm not giving the age or locality. Yes, I'm not being totally forthcoming but that's the fun of the game. My one hint to my mammal fossil friends:

1. The jaw isn't from the critter that you think it is.

Enjoy

Looks like a cat mandible maybe lion or leopard. B)B)B):)

"Looks like a cat mandible"

Yes, that's the easy part. Now comes the tougher part. :) Not lion or leopard.

C'mon, now you are just pulling cat names out of a hat, or cats in the hat. ;)

Do I hear another guess, cause '55 has struck out.

After a detailed inspection of said picture and being stumped...

I'd figured I'll try a right click / save image as...

iger1_3_.jpg

hmmmm

is it a Tiger (Smilodon californicus)?

or did you purposely name it that to throw us off?

Very sneaky you are. I actually thought about doing that to throw people off just in case some braniac would do that. :) Kinda cheating though isn't it? Smilodon californicus? Is that your final answer? NO! Bwahahahahaha!

:faint:

ok, lessee.......fragmentary jaw. one view. no locality. no age. "clue" is that it isn't what i think it is. my sole data point for analysis is that maybe the jaw was 9 or 10 inches.

said it didn't bark, so it wasn't a muntjac. probably bison.

guess that's enough brain exercise for one "stumper" session.

Shhh. don't tell anybody - it's a pharyngeal jaw from a duckbilled platypus. Or a non-barking bison. Well one or the other.

One of the first posters guessed cat mandible. I replied that that was the easy part. You are halfway there after the first serious post How hard could it be? He he he.

Ok a few more useless clues in the am and then the uber surprising answer later in the day.

Again, I hope everyone understands that I'm not boasting or showing off I'm just putting up some cool stuff you may never see in a book, the interwebz or any museum.

I've already virtually given away two virtual prizes for previous correct answers. I'll work on something tonight

for the person who guesses(and it will be a guess since you will not see this in any book or on the internet) correctly.
