Some Uncommon Extant Shark Teeth

MarcoSr

Recommended Posts

I have a large collection of extant shark and ray jaws that I use to understand tooth features.  However, a number of tooth features, especially tooth root features, are really hard to see in jaws.  So I’ve started to purchase (40+ species to date) and photograph individual teeth of a number of extant shark species.  I’ll try to post some of the pictures (labial and lingual views) as I take them.  For this post I’ll post three extant species that most collectors don’t see.

Glyphis gangeticus (Ganges Shark)

Upper teeth (23 mm, 23 mm, & 21 mm):

I agree that the pictures of micro teeth have to be as big as possible to show all the tiny details.

That's a great resource. Thanks for posting.

I create the pictures as a resource to help me identify fossil teeth.  It is much easier to look through pictures to find an id versus pulling out thousands of specimens to look at.

I just got some additional Dalatias licha (Kitefin Shark) teeth including upper teeth and some posterior lower teeth so I thought I would add some pictures to this post.

Dalatias licha (Kitefin Shark)

Upper symphyseal tooth (4 mm) (Note I could have cleaned up this tooth with 3% H2O2 but didn't do so because the tooth is very fragile and I didn't want to chance damaging it):

Upper teeth (8 & 9 mm):

5ae341c66aaeb_Dalatiaslicha(KitefinShark)Upper8mm2.thumb.jpg.285f863fb151fc81cb48a1d4c994b54b.jpg5ae341c799fa2_Dalatiaslicha(KitefinShark)Upper8mm.thumb.jpg.8f73b7b71316fd6ac0239d8ddca8cc3e.jpg5ae341c8ba9d4_Dalatiaslicha(KitefinShark)Upper29mm2.thumb.jpg.e3abb5307c74e66889e722d3088857d9.jpg5ae341c9e7cef_Dalatiaslicha(KitefinShark)Upper29mm.thumb.jpg.6ec340654acbb530baa7f61ee7acc819.jpg

Lower posterior tooth (7 mm).  This tooth position is the most distal tooth position in the lower jaw dentition and the tooth only has an interlocking grove on the labial side.

Unfortunately we don't find fossil teeth of some of these really interesting deep water sharks on the East Coast of the US.  France has/had a number of sites where you could find teeth from a good number of these deep water species.  I've tried for years to get matrix from some of these sites without any luck.

Wow some of these teeth are crazy!

Deep water sharks have really interesting and unusual teeth.  Their teeth are not common as fossils so we don't see them that much.

Hi Marco Sr.,

I was going to say it's hard to get any of these teeth as fossils.  Teeth of Glyphis were coming out of Java for a while back in the 90's.  It's tough to get a nice Somniosus tooth.  I have one partial fossil one and examples of a modern upper and lower (gifts from Dr. Gordon Hubbell).  They come out of that post-Miocene base gravel in the Antwerp area, Belgium.  Collectors almost never find an upper.  Looking at your modern specimens, you can see why.  The roots are rather delicate both due to thinness and high vascularization and therefore poor candidates to survive as a fossil.  I haven't had a chance at a fossil  Dalatias tooth.

Yes, I think you're going to have to go to those French sites to get a sample.  You need to go to Landes and get one of those viper shark teeth (Trigonognathus).  While you're down there, can you get one for me too?

Cappetta 2012 has a large number of fossil shark teeth from deep water shark species from different sites in France.  Unfortunately it seems most of those sites from Cappetta's book are dug out or closed to the public now including sites in Landes.  I know one French collector who has matrix from collecting years ago but we haven't been able to agree on a trade (I need the arm and leg that he wants in trade :hearty-laugh: ).
