Today I stopped at the Gainesville Museum of Natural History in Gainesville, Florida so my wife could see the Rainforest Butterfly Exhibit and walk among the butterflies. Well after doing that, I did what any good FF Member would do, I took a ton of pictures of their Fossil exhibits. It is a very nice museum and it is free, with the exception of special exhibits like the Butterflies. For your viewin pleasure, her are the pics- it will take a couple posts.

Wow!

You did take a lot of photos! :D

Marvelous as well, though i think some of their labels are wrong!

Nice variety and well laid out to make the most of the space.

Splendid.

Thanks for sharing. :)

@Fruitbat Thanks Joe.

@Tidgy's Dad Adam thanks and you are correct about the way they laid it out. The Fossil section does not have a very big footprint at all, but they arrange it well. I did not look at the labels and I believe the pics that I took corresponded to the actual piece, so if you see something that is not correct, that may be the case.

I always wanted to see the Florida Natural History Museum. The attention paid to Florida's rich trove of invertebrate fossils was especially appreciated. Thanks for sharing.

I have the true good fortune to be visiting the Museum at Gainesville on May 11th...  I will try to get a few interesting photos like this one from a 2012 trip.

Very nice tour thanks, never visited added to my list.  Great photos.   Some of their dinosaur teeth ID's pretty bad so are the labels in need of first aid :o

I have the true good fortune to be visiting the Museum at Gainesville on May 11th...  I will try to get a few interesting photos like this one from a 2012 trip.

The hands of Richard Hulbert with a skull of Castoroides ohioensis

Hey Jack--I assume you will be in Gainesville for the FPS tour, field trip and meeting.  If so I will see you there.

Wish I could join you guys for the FPS meeting, but my daughter and family are moving to their new house on the 11th and I have been recruited to help them move.

I'll be there Mike from cradle to grave, the grave being the Montbrook Fossil site for dusting off a few old bones...:bone::bone:https://www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu/montbrook/

Looks like a nice museum with a wide variety of specimens.  Thanks for sharing!

Hi Joe,

It's a beautiful museum and that "life through time" type permanent exhibit is awesome.  Florida's surface fossil history starts in the Late Eocene (they have to drill deep to get to older rocks) and there's a nice representation of what's been found from that time forward.  I try to visit every time I'm in town on business which is at least twice per year.  They change the specimens periodically in the hall on the way to the permanent exhibit and sometimes the temporary exhibit in another hall there is fossil-related (Titanoboa a couple of years ago, sharks, etc.).

The gift shop is nice too with a lot of local science-related merchandise.  They used to sell a variety of paleo publications but they haven't restocked.  I was just there a couple of weeks ago.

Jess
