wooly mammoth tusk ID.

I recently acquired this piece of what I was told a wooly mammoth tusk. It weighs about 4 pounds and is about 10” long by 5” wide. I just thought I would post it on TFF to get some feed back. I was told it is originally from Alaska but can’t be sure. I would welcome any information related to this unique piece.

Looks like a piece to Me, but would like to see the end (schreger lines) to be sure.

I do not see any schreger lines, but maybe that is just the picture.

It looks to have some kind of brown preservative paint on it. There are like tree rings under brown coating. Wonder if I should try to maybe clean a little section with some acetone.

Look at it under magnification to see if they are visible.

@Ptychodus04, what do You think about cleaning this piece?

What would be the best cleaner to get this brown coating off it. Any ideas.

@Calvert Cliff Dweller, do a sample test of acetone. Brush it on a small inconspicuous area and see if it removes the coating. If it doesn’t, try denatured alcohol. If nothing really works, it may be really old white glue. If that’s the case, it will take some more drastic preparation to clean it off.
