Hello everyone!

This past Saturday, Viola and I braved the cold to do some fossil collecting in the south pit of Hungry Hollow near Arkona, Ontario (Mid-Devonian).  When I got home and washed up my specimens, I saw something interesting on one of the horn corals - I think it's a brachiopod - am I right?  And does anyone know its identity?  Thanks in advance for your help!

That's a brachiopod from the family craniidae, Philhedra crenistriata. :)

Beautiful and great find.

Yup, that's the one.

I'm getting quite good at brachiopods and have been studying Hungry Hollow stuff, because Monica kindly sent me some lovely things from there.

I'll have to send you some, too. I get to collect just outside the Arkona site. I keep one of each and have no use for any duplicates. :) The best stuff is from slabbing.

PM me your address. I was already planning on surprising you and this spares me creeping around. Whatever you want from here, I probably got for giving. :)

Nice one, Monica! Who gets to keep it? You or Viola?

You've just hit upon the question that is on my mind whenever a fossil is found - who gets to keep it?

Well, now that Viola is pretty darn good at finding fossils herself, we usually each keep what we find.  Sometimes, however, I will give her one of the fossils that I've found if she seems particularly interested in it or if she's having an "off day".  She did pretty well for herself this past Saturday, and she didn't seem terribly interested in this particular fossil, so I'll probably keep it for myself.  I usually come home with more fossils than her, mainly because (a) I try to collect as much as possible because I'm always thinking about the Secret Santa fossil exchange later in the year (I don't delve into Viola's stash for this event - since I pick up more fossils than Viola I send out my fossils for both boxes so Viola doesn't have to give up any of hers), and (b) Viola usually gets distracted at some point during our outings - this past Saturday she was having a blast climbing up and sliding down the walls of the pit, getting amazingly covered with mud in the process - I'm glad she had fun, but you should've seen her snow pants at the end of the day - disgusting!!!

Sweet fossil, Monica. These associated fossils help give an idea of what the environment may have looked like back then.

I'm curious whether it's possible to know if the attachment of one onto the other, occurred before or after the demise of the 'host'.

My guess would be after, but I just don't know.

Thanks!  I was actually hoping to find the star-shaped bryozoan Botryllopora socialis on the horn corals that I collected (I have found a total of three horn corals with this type of epibiont on them from Hungry Hollow - all were collected on my first trip there), so I was initially disappointed after washing them to discover that none had the bryozoan I was looking for, but when I saw this little brachiopod my disappointment changed into delight. :D

You're a good mom.

Thanks, Roger - your comment has made my day!  I'm often pulled in so many different directions that sometimes I feel as though I'm not the best mom/wife/daughter/sister/aunt/teacher/colleague/friend/etc. that I could be, so hearing someone acknowledge that I'm doing a good job means a lot to me. :)

Thanks for the positive comment - I'm very happy with this new specimen!

As for knowing when the attachment happened between the coral and the brachiopod - I have no idea, but perhaps someone out there on the forum does...
