Can anyone help me identify? It rattles when shaken.

I don't think it's coprolite.

There are some fossil sponges which rattling when shaken, in german "Klappersteine" see here: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klapperstein

But they are known only from flint and as far as it seems from the photo, your piece is not from flint...(?)

Some fossil roots of plants looks similar to your piece, too.

Or it is just a rock/geology.

Let's see what others will tell...

Thank you, Pemphix. It’s lighter than a rock and has a peculiar smell, too. I’ll keep digging for an answer.

Looks geologic in origin to me, - not a fossil.

Maybe a geode or concretion.
