I found this item at Onslow Beach in Jacksonville, NC however it wasn’t on the beach. It was found along the roadway approaching the ICW bridge located right before entering the beach strand. It has the shape of a tooth but that might be wishful thinking. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

I’m afraid it is just wishful thinking. It’s a smoothed river rock. But keep looking!

Thank you for reviewing my post and providing valuable comments. I’m good with smoothed river rock. Knowing what it is helps me with future identifications!  Building my identification library one hopeful specimen at a time.

not a tooth, but seems a little bit a (water) worn piece of bone (see surface).

But some rocks have very similar surface, so difficult to tell...

Thank you for the reply.  Is there something I should look for on this specimen that will help me to determine if it is indeed a worn bone or water worn rock?  I just really want to put the item in the right pile so that I can use the specimen for future comparison. Thanks

I'm getting an extremely water worn smooth bone piece vibe on this one.

Bulldozers and dirt Bulldozers and dirt
behind the trailer, my desert
Them red clay piles are heaven on earth
I get my rocks off, bulldozers and dirt

Bone can be identified by the presence of pores, because the insides of bones are generally porous. Unfortunatly this piece is so water worn that it's hard to tell if there's pores. I also think there's a burn test, but I don't know much about this test so let someone else tell you about it. :)

I'm with the bone camp. Lots of worn bone like this around the beach and in lag deposits.

For comparison's sake here's a picture of a chunk of mammal bone that's been smoothed by water. Happy hunting :)
