Someone was doing some serious core sampling near the F-F boundary in Western New York. I wonder what they were checking for.

It is hard to tell. I would guess either magnetic susceptibility (MS);

carbon, zinc, strontium, sulfur, and / or uranium isotope analysis; 

elemental analysis (e.g. mercury); or some combination of these.

Oxytropidoceras, Thanks for the reference list. I was also checking the authors, to see if any were Post Doctoral students from a local university professor; who knows this beach and its' strata very well.
