It is the fertile structure of the cordaite. They are fairly rare. Definitely a nice find. Thanks for the ID Rob, I will change it up above. stats
The Alethopteris is very nice, but the Cyclopteris is stunning! I haven't seen many that large. The little one might be Odontopteris. I'll have a better look tomorrow. Cheers, Rich
Nimravis
I posted these finds on another active thread that I have going in the Forum. These unopened concretions are part of a collection that I recently purchased from a friend. I have been freeze / thawing some since 7-12-22. Today after the thawed, I did take a hammer and tapped a number of them, no real whacking. First came out a cute fern. Then a beautiful Essexella asherae popped out. Next was a nice Tully Monster- And the next concretion that opened was another Tully Monster. You will notice an added piece on the second picture below. That piece had popped off during a prior Freeze / Thaw.
Nimravis
I had a little bit of time this evening to whack open some concretions- here are the results. A large, flat concretion with a large Macroneuropteris. Another Macroneuropteris. Alethopteris- Pecopteris- A cute little pinnule. Stem? Calamites with internode.

I thought I read that somewhere.

I'm not sure they even thought about freeze/thaw back in those days. If I recall correctly, he would hold the concretion between his feet to whack it. So he could say he never hit a thumb, but he was probably one of the only people to ever hit a toe! Hopefully he wore steel-tipped shoes...

Nimravis
Today I went through a lot of concretions. I selected ones that were partials and a few complete ones. These and all of the ones on recent posts were from a recent construction site, and from what I am being told, it has now been seeded and collecting has ended for that spot. I collected a lot of concretions from this spot, but I am not the only one, there were a number of collectors hitting that spot and I bet thousands of concretions were collected. I am going to start with my favorite finds of the day, and there were only a few. Neuropteris pinnule- Lepidodendron leaf scars Two little Neuropteris??pinnules. Acanthotelson stimpsoni shrimp ?? This is only the second shrimp that I have found at that site. A small twig on light colored matrix- I also do like this large Cyperites- Here are other miscellaneous pieces that have been put in a bucket for another ESCONI collecting trip. These pieces include Pecopteris, Odontopteris, Cyperites, Annularia, Neuropteris, bark and coprolite. Nimravis
Today was a little different, I only only the concretions that you see below, plus three others that were void of fossils. All of the concretions came from a container that I have been freezing since 8-26-22. During that time frame I did ten freeze / thaw cycles, but nothing ever popped, so I decided to whack them. These concretions are some of the hardest that I have come across. Here are the fossils- Annularia- Pecopteris- Edited October 1, 2022 by Nimravis

Nimravis
I had a little time this evening after work and decided to whack open a number of concretions. I will start out with my favorites- Alethopteris Serlii- Annularia- I put this little piece in a floating frame. Neuropteris- Nit the prettiest piece, but I still like it. This is a cool piece, I believe Pecopteris and coprolite?? Another cute piece- This is a weird piece, thinking Calamites, but not sure, it is very small. Here are some other things-

Nimravis
Today I whacked open a number of concretions that I recently collected from Pit 3. The nice thing about these concretions is that you have about a 90% success rate of finding a fossil. I found Macroneuropteris, Cyperites, Asterophyllites, Cyclopteris, Annularia, Crenulopteris, a double cone, coprolite, bark and a few fern that I am not positive on. Here are the pics of the Fossils in the order that they opened. Some are very nice, others not so nice, but that is what it like to collect MC fossils. stats
There are some nice ones there. The second one in your first post looks like a Neuropteris. Love the cone. A bunch of cones and Lycopodites have come from that spot. Cheers, Rich
