Looks to be a large paleoniscoid.

Nice find!

Thanks much- it was such a funky concretion, I am really surprised that I got it open. I saw a small crack along the plane line last night and I used a dental pick and the two halves came apart with no problem.

Very nice fish. I'm glad the freeze-thaw was successful!

Thanks, I caught right in time, since pieces start breaking off with each session.

I spent about 1 hour going through a bunch of concretions from “Across from Pit 4” today, nothing special was found.

I will start with my favorite, a nice piece of coprolite.C895C52F-6C74-4B7C-A011-71E5D18EEFD7.jpeg.882fb619cfa00adc2bd18938ebdc15d9.jpeg5B5BD3E8-7A70-4B77-805A-58551F38C1D1.jpeg.23dba00a7aecae2e68d759af0a8d8b84.jpegA1DA543B-29E9-44AA-9324-8D252045406A.jpeg.7504ddb786368b6389cb3b3de9d57767.jpeg

I like the coprolite, that's a good one, but i also like the first bark bit that looks like Calamites. :)

It was a great day to open concretions with the temps in the mid 40's. I was going through concretions from "Across From Pit 4". Here are some of my finds from today.

My buddy was back today helping me. He never runs, even when I am swinging the hammer, I must be a Squirrel Whisperer.

My favorite find was this Neuropteris, it has great veination. Even though it did not fully open, I really like the way it came out.

This happens more that I like, but worms from this area rarely ever break properly and I usually do not post them, but here is one from today.

Other items that I do not post, but thought that I would show some that I came across today. These fossils never beak properly and they are usually sideways to the plane line that I am cracking.

Yes, the Neuropteris is beautiful.

So is the squirrel.

Tidgy likes to watch me prepping and have a sniff at all the pieces. :)

You're not going to try to pop that middle piece off the Neuropteris? Surely it must be doable, with low risk of damaging it.

No, I don't it the way it is and even though I see a little crack, with my luck I will most likely break it in half.

Time for a micro chisel. I find a jeweler's screwdriver works well.(But never tried one on a mason nodule.)

Nice pieces (even if they are not Your best), most would like them in their collections.

@stats Rich, finally something opened.

I just saw the fish!  Sweet!   Congrats!

39 is not a bad number.  I have a horseshoe crab that took about 2 years to open.  How often were you cycling?

Cheers,

Rich

Rich, without checking a calendar I believe I found it approximately 50 days or a little less prior to the time that it throws open. So I was cycling it sometimes every day.

I would try it. You could always glue it back together if it breaks... it's not like you're doing it out in the field and losing a piece!

For you I will do it later- it is also not my first Neuropteris. Lol

Thanks for posting this reply, it reminded me to try and crack that piece off. I must have hit it, not real hard, about 20 times on each side and nothing budged but the outer shell. I will try it outside when I am in a better position to hit it.

It's hard to imagine that it would be stubborn, if there is leaf under there and you say there's a separation-?

What direction are you hitting it from?
