Nimravis
Cracking open concretions today I found a possible Euproops danae Horseshoe crab, a nice Pecopteris fern, a piece of bark, a Mazonomya Clam and a Myalina clam.

Tidgy's Dad
More great finds! The Euproops danae is of course amazing, but I rather like the Mazonomya too. Can't wait to see the next batch. 1 Life's Good! Tortoise Friend.

Stay tuned- I am trying to open between 50-75 concretions a day, at this rate I should go through mine by 2020 lol.

Nimravis
I took the day off from work today and cracked open about 125 concretions today, here are some of the concretions and some of my finds. Achistrum sp. - Sea Cucumber I believe an Acanthotelson stimpsoni Shrimp Essexella asherae Jellyfish Unknown Worm- dis not crack properly, possibly due to pyrite inclusion. I believe Spiropteris Alethopteris Neuropteris A poor Annularia - it might clean up better. Bark Things that I never keep- concretions with misc. plant debris or pyrite.

The sea cucumber is a particularly good one and the shrimp has a very nice tail fan. (if that's what it is) . Life's Good! Tortoise Friend. Usually the fossil are somewhat centered in the concretion, every once in a while, you find one that is off-center like the shrimp.

Nimravis
Well today was not very productive, I did find numerous Mazonomya clams ( one with an internal mold) that came from a housing development that was going up years ago which was located across the street from Shadow Lakes (Pit 4)- this area would still contain the same Fauna. Also found some bark.
Nimravis
And from Pit 11, there was a worm and a sea cucumber with it’s mouth- that is always nice to find.

Nimravis
And the cracking continues- nothing special today except a nice, some what long, Lycopod leaf. All of these concretions are out of Shadow Lakes (Pit 4), as with almost all the concretions I have left, they were collected throughout the 90's. Myalina Clam with an internal mold. Coprolite Lycopod Leaves Poorly preserved examples of Pecopteris Poorly preserved examples of Annularia Stems ans bark Check back tomorrow for more finds.
Tidgy's Dad
I shall. Yes, that lycopod leaf is pretty long. Nice find. Life's Good! Tortoise Friend.
Nimravis
Well today it is extremely house in the Chicagoland area, it is currently 91 degrees with very high humidity. Breaking open concretions is a real chore when you are doing it outside. I would say that I had about an 80% success rate on the bucket that I chose today. These concretions came from Pit 4, which contains a very high concentration of flora. The only problem is that they do not come out as clean as the plant material from the actual creek. All of the fossils that you will see today are as they broke open about an hour ago, some show nice, most will need to be cleaned- if I ever get around to that. The first couple pics will show how nice it is when a concretion splits open correctly after 300+ million years. The first pic shows the concretion and the second shows where it split after a couple whacks- very nice. The fossil in this one is a very nice piece of bark, I really love bark. Today I came across a number of ferns- Pecopteris, Neuropteris and Cyclopteris (a big one). Cyclopteris Some of my favorite pieces of bark are Calamites, and what is nice is when they contain internodes like the ones below. What is even better though is when it is Calamites with internodes in 3D as the 2nd thru 4th pic below shows. Here are other pics of bark that I found today. And last, some pieces of Lycopod leaves. A lot of the pieces that you see here are small, partial concretions. When I would collect, I would pick up everything and deal with it later. I have learned not to leave anything behind, because I have found some rare / cool things in crappy concretions. Check back tomorrow for more finds.
Tidgy's Dad
Love those Calamites stem pieces, but my favourite has to be the beautiful Cyclopteris. A good day for the plants! Life's Good! Tortoise Friend.
