And no, this is not a 6 Leaf Clover- it is a garbage concretion.

If I would have found this, I would have thought it was something amazing. It really is beautiful, even if it is junk.  Mazon Creek fossil are so enigmatic.

The photo is too small for me to see the spiral structure. If it is a spiral, it could also be a from a lungfish. :)

Here you go- original size.

I use smaller sizes to get more pics in one post.

I can definitely see the spiral structure. Have you ever found a shark tooth or lungfish tooth plate in the concretions?

Here are two recent finds- I have my doubts on both, but they look like it. I sent the first one to a professor to look at, but I have not heard anything back as of yet.

I’m starting to wonder if it is a Monura.

Could be.

How big is it?

I think the monura, such as Dasyleptus are pretty small?

I found a Dasyleptus on 7-3-18 and I was thinking about it while I was driving back from the city this evening. Here again is a pic of the one from 7-3-18, both are about the same size.

I had a family get together in Chicago this afternoon, so a couple hours before I had to leave I found enough time to open a few concretions from Pit 4. Here are the two piles that I went through and pics of some of my finds.

IMG_9410.jpg.f6d79ecf279abcfd494755b73d0befe4.jpgIMG_9426.jpg.87106435723cfcc96be48be20264ad75.jpg

One thing that is different with Mazon Creek concretions is the shapes that some of them come in.

Here is a Dutch Shoe and Paul Bunyan's guitar pic.

IMG_9379.jpg.3ce80eb3d7acabdfbbf79ddf41c0b972.jpgIMG_9434.jpg.760c572fa052e84efd5fae8731ede660.jpg

Every once in a while I will come along a rock that had the shape of a concretion and later is I happen to rinse them off I discover that it is just a rock, as in the case below.

IMG_9420.jpg.bccab3e4e035c7296c108562c8ce048e.jpg

If you are hitting the concretion with the pick portion of the hammer you can also tell if it is a concretion or not. A concretion has a lower thud sound when hit and a rock has a high pitch sound- that method has never failed me when it was applied.

I come across a lot of concretions that have what I consider plant matter. Even though I do not keep these, I always look at them closely with a "loupe" to check for insects or spiders.

Here is a good example of how some fossils are orientated in the concretion- this is usually the case when it comes to many of the Lycopod or stem pieces that I find. It really makes it very difficult to get a clean break when this occurs. It this case, I would always strike this piece as the Red line indicates. I did just that and the concretion broke in half, revealing how it was set, so I then struck it along the Yellow line.

A couple more pieces that appear to be Lycopod leaves- these three pieces opened in consecutive order.

A couple pieces of bark- starting with Calamites with an internode.

I usually always have a bad time with Annularia, the are either have crappy preservation or I shatter them, as was the case today. The real thing that really ticks me off is the fact that they are my favorite Mazon Creek flora.

I posted pics a short time ago of the one I found on July 3rd- it does look similar and I know the earlier one is a Dasyleptus.

@ynot and @Tidgy's Dad here is a little Chalcopyrite that I just found. Everyone in a while, I find some pretty examples in concretions.

Here is a yellow substance that I have never found in any concretion.

Interesting.

The second one could be yellow quartz with sulphur, (I can't see it very well) which is quite rare, but I guess is more than possible considering how the concretions form.

What do you think, Tony?

Before I had to go furniture shopping with the wife, I was able to go through these concretions from the Braceville Shaft Mine (Essex Biota - Marine).

IMG_9455.jpg.306b763bbffe5ecc5ec039bd029724b1.jpg

I mentioned yesterday how some concretions have different shapes, here is one shaped live a cowboy boot- unfortunately, this concretion was void of anything.

Although this pile contained a lot of concretions, there were hardly any find.

After the shopping was completed, I thought I would start working on this new pile from Braceville, but as I was about to start, the storms rolled into the area again and I had to stop- maybe tomorrow.

Nice clams. I especially like the sea cucumber. However, I'm pretty sure that's Santa's boot.
