Nimravis
Due to appointments that I had today, I was not able to get to any concretions, but did want to post a find that I made back on 5-19-18 prior to me starting this thread. This concretion that I found at Pit 4 (Shadow Lakes), contains a Euproops danae Horseshoe crab, so far the only one found since May. I did not try to open the concretion any further, to avoid damage.

(I have an affinity for horseshoe crabs). Could it be glued back together and prepped out using an air abrasion? Darwin said: " Man sprang from monkeys." Tony, I have no doubt that it can be done, I might look at it after I get through these buckets. I just took a count of the 5-Gallon buckets that I have left, and that number is 57- with an average of 300 concretions in each bucket, I calculate that at about +17,000 more before I can prep out this Horseshoe crab. LOL, I was a concretion collecting fool back in the day, and just think, I believe I have been out collecting concretions maybe 4 times during the last 10 years.

I have about 20-30 (not all 5 gallon, some are 2.5) and would love to have 57. Lots of nuts for freeze thaw in the winter! Cheers, Rich

Good luck on your endeavor.
Nimravis
Well I am waiting to pick up a pizza to take home so I can eat a couple pieces and then leave to go climb until 11 pm, but prior to this, I was able to crack a couple concretions from the bucket that I was working on Sunday. This is the bucket from “Across From Pit 4” that contained the possible fish that I am freeze / thawing now. Well like what happened before, it happened again, not only did I find another large Lungfish scale from this location but one halve shattered. This location is notorious for having concretions that shatter from the slightest hit of a hammer. I am still trying to put the other piece back together and the Super Glue was not holding and then I checked the temperature outside and it was 51 degrees, right at the level that it is not supposed to hold. I do not have all of the pieces, but I have enough to try to reassemble it a bit- At least the other halve is in very good condition.
Nimravis
Here are a couple more finds from today- these and others will go into my ESCONI buckets. A poorly preserved and broke Cyclus americanus . Myalinella meeki Bivalve- A couple miscellaneous pieces of Flora-

Euproops occurs in the British Coal Measures. I always hoped to find one, but never did. Lovely find. Life's Good! Tortoise Friend.

Much larger than the ~1cm (max) ones I find around here in the Upper Cretaceous.

Hopefully one of my larger concretions that I will freeze has a big fish, but I doubt it and I have never seen one anywhere.
Wrangellian
Well my guess is you'd have to find a concretion on the order of feet, not inches, to find anything near a complete one of those! What is the smallest possible fish with scales that large, I wonder.

Wrangellian
Yeah, if there is any chance of it containing anything you need to check it out for sure. Love that big Annularia+Neuropteris, that's a great 'twofer'.
Nimravis
Here are a couple finds from today- "Across from Pit 4" Cyclopteris ? Neuropteris- Double Pecopteris- Myalinella meeki- Calamites Bark- I started going through a bucket of concretions from Pit 11 and so far I am not having much luck. This Essexella asherae Jellyfish was in the bucket already opened. This next concretion open with the lightest tap, it would not have opened any differently if I did the freeze / thaw method. It does not have great preservation at all, and it must bend around in the concretion. Even though you cannot make out much on this piece, I am thinking that it is an Esconites zelus Worm.
KimTexan
I think the jelly fish is pretty cool looking. The first and second are nice too.

How big of a fish are we talking here? So what is the little blip on the top right around 1 o’clock? Is it part of this scale or another scale? I had someone talking to me, it was also getting dark and the temp was at the point that the glue was not holding- a total mess.
Nimravis
Today was a funky weather day in the Chicagoland area, winds were blowing at 27 MPH, the "feels like temp" was 29 degrees and there was snow flurries, but even with all of that I spent about 4 hours going through concretions. Nothing great was found today, but I was able to get rid of a bunch of concretions that were void of fossils. I will start off with a couple little pieces that were my favorite finds of the day. Here is a Myalinella meeki Bivalve that appears to have Mother of Pearl on it, this is the first time that I have ever found anything like this. Here are a couple nice little concretions, each with a little Neuropteris pinnule. And here is a nice tiny Myalinella meeki- Here was a nice piece of Coprolite- Everyone once in a while I would come across a fossil that was deposited by the retreat of the glaciers, here is a little Orthocone that was found in a bucket of concretions that I was working on today. In the past, I have found trilobite portions and rocks containing crinoid stems. Many times today I opened some large, very nice looking concretions that had nothing worthwhile inside of them. Here are some other finds from today- Pecopteris- Neuropteris- Annularia- Lepidostrobophyllum majus- Bark- Multiple concretions with Myalinella meeki Bivalves- Sedgwickia Bivalve- Lastly I wanted to mention what has been going on with my Freeze / Thaw of concretions. So far I have went through 6 cycles and not one of the concretions have cracked open, I will continue this process and see what happens.

Looks like precious opal. This mineraloid is notorious for instability, cracks up as it dries out. You may want to put a thin coating of stabilizer on it.
