2DE11399-4AD3-4EB6-9DAB-45CEB2D25C0B.jpegThis is a pretty nice example of Cordaianthus ovatus. It is the fertile structure of the cordaite.

They are fairly rare.

Definitely a nice find.

Thanks for the ID Rob, I will change it up above.

The Alethopteris is very nice, but the Cyclopteris is stunning!  I haven't seen many that large.   The little one might be Odontopteris.  I'll have a better look tomorrow.

Cheers,

Rich

I posted these finds on another active thread that I have going in the Forum.

These unopened concretions are part of a collection that I recently purchased from a friend. I have been freeze / thawing some since 7-12-22. Today after the thawed, I did take a hammer and tapped a number of them, no real whacking.

First came out a cute fern.

Then a beautiful Essexella asherae popped out.

Next was a nice Tully Monster-

And the next concretion that opened was another Tully Monster. You will notice an added piece on the second picture below. That piece had popped off during a prior Freeze / Thaw.

I had a little bit of time this evening to whack open some concretions- here are the results.

A large, flat concretion with a large Macroneuropteris.

I think you've said you hit your hand a few times...   I can't imagine George Langford with one arm hitting concretions!

Didn't George Langford used to like to say, "I've never hit my thumb hitting a concretion!"? I thought I read that somewhere.

One would imagine that he was a big fan of freeze/thaw.

I'm not sure they even thought about freeze/thaw back in those days. If I recall correctly, he would hold the concretion between his feet to whack it. So he could say he never hit a thumb, but he was probably one of the only people to ever hit a toe! Hopefully he wore steel-tipped shoes...

Yeah, no or at best natural freeze/thaw back then.

Cheers,

Rich

I don’t think so, he sat and whacked the concretions open.

Today I went through a lot of concretions. I selected ones that were partials and a few complete ones. These  and all of the ones on recent posts were from a recent construction site, and from what I am being told, it has now been seeded and collecting has ended for that spot. I collected a lot of concretions from this spot, but I am not the only one, there were a number of collectors hitting that spot and I bet thousands of concretions were collected.

I am going to start with my favorite finds of the day, and there were only a few.

Neuropteris pinnule-

Today was a little different, I only only the concretions that you see below, plus three others that were void of fossils. All of the concretions came from a container that I have been freezing since 8-26-22. During that time frame I did ten freeze / thaw cycles, but nothing ever popped, so I decided to whack them. These concretions are some of the hardest that I have come across.

Here are the fossils-

Annularia-

All of the concretions came from a container that I have been freezing since 8-26-33.
