I attempted to find some jurassic material over at the Lourihnã formation. But no luck. Really I couldn’t give it enough attention. I only spent less than an afternoon. My next trip hopefully I will be able to dedicate much more time to it.  Given that it was my first trip to Portugal, most of my days were preoccupied with site seeing. Nontheless a cool experience.

And yes it’s difficult and can get dangerous. I don’t recommend digging shoeless like I did. As you dig, rocks fall and hit your foot. Yeah... :doh!::D

However my days were filled with cool adventures.  One of my favorite trips was to the National Monument of the Dinosaur footprints. Only about a 15 minute cab ride from the famous Fatima of Portugal.

These footprints are the oldest trails of Sauropod footprints in the world. That’s right....175 million years old.

Despite not being successful in your hunt looks like a super trip.  The tracks are very nice.  Great photos thanks for the tour just confirms it's a place I need to visit.

In the opposite direction, not far from Fatima as well, visit the Moeda Underground Caves.  It’s a half hour tour. It’s interesting.  The further you go down the older the rocks around you.  In the deepest section, you can see Ammonites in the stones around you.

These last photos really belong in the museum section, but  I figured I would throw in all of the final things together here.

This is the natural history Museum of Lisbon. As I mentioned in the Lourinhã Museum album,  unfortunately this museum lacked much dinosaur material.  Good news is that in the next few months they are going to open a big, new totally dedicated dinosaur section. There were still a few gems, see for yourself.

This section below was really cool.  You walk down the line in this dark linear room outlining the history of time. On the right arr the displays.  On the left are models of the world and how it was at that point in time. I.e Pangea, etc.

Here below we have a sauropod vert, below that is a pterosaur tooth, allosaurus tooth, and finally a camptosaurus tooth.

Great post!

Sorry you were unlucky in your Jurassic hunt, but the photos are terrific.

I love the dinosaur footprints, the museum specimens and the Muscovy ducks. :)

Thank you for sharing.

@Troodon thanks for the kind words. As a plan B, I did find some interesting modern things in Lisbon, but nothing spectacular. I’ll post those in ID soon.
