I'm surprised that any respectable museum would have an ammonite that's mostly carved like that Moroccan one appears to be, without at least mentioning it in the label.

Yes. I had the same reaction. It prove there are no specialists in the Museum. This ammonite is totally fake and I presume that the Museum gave a big price for it.

I hope they didn't pay a lot for it!

Here the provincial museum accepts donations and will write a tax receipt for them (but only if you ask for it) up to $200. I don't know if they ever pay for anything unless they have no other choice perhaps.

@caterpillar @Wrangellian yeah guys, this was the only museum that’s seriously slacking, the natural history museum.  I honestly didn’t see any professionals there and the museum was kind of empty.  So hopefully in the future when they do the dinosaur addition to that museum they step it up a little bit.  Even the gift shop sells Moroccan fossils which I thought wasn’t so great. Oh well.

Thanks for the report. Just curious. Can you say which Jurassic stages are exposed on that stretch of beach?

@Ludwigia I believe the Lourihnã formation there is late Jurassic, Kimmeridgian/Tithonian
