Cool rock with hole in it!

I found this near a river and wanted some advice please. I don’t know if you can make out the tiny bumps that are inside or not, but it looks like it’s full of them inside the hole. Might just be mud for all I know. Found in Ohio. Should I crack it open or not?

There might be multiple bioerosional markings on the surface. I assume the punctuated longitudinal bifurcating patterns might be sponge boring (Entobia igen).
Can we have a better look of them ?

I can sort of see the bumps in the hole.

See if they wash off, if not it could be a hole where a sponge or coral has eroded away leaving a mold behind.

I suppose you will see a structure similar to the one below if you crack it open. :)
Thank you for the pics.

Or some kind of crystallization.

So do you have any suggestions about how to do this? I'm a little nervous about ruining the inside.  Just start hitting it with a hammer a little at a time?? Or is there a better way to go about this?

Best way would be to cut it with a rock saw.

Hitting it with a hammer will make many pieces.

I hate to be the one to say this, but although the photos are too out of focus to be able to determine what's in the hole, I've got a feeling that it's not worth the effort. I'd just give it a whack with a club hammer and see what's left over.

For geodes, I start by figuring where I want the object to split. Then lightly hit that area going  around it This hopefully makes some micro fractures that weaken the rock in the area that you want breakage. Then continue a little harder each time till it fractures. It works for me better than whacking it to start with. But even this will not prevent unforeseen breakage if there is already stress fractures naturally in the rock, so have superglue ready!! But by all means, break this open then post pictures.

  • 2 weeks later...

i think there was a sponge that was the core of this nodule.

The sponge has now long gone but has left its impression as the silica formed around it.

I'll try to sustain my idea of Entobia with the comparative picture below. :)
