Uncle Siphuncle
I got my wife out with me today for the first time in a few months. Decent pickings in the Walnut Formation. Engonoceras ammonites in this formation are usually pretty fragmented. This one still needs 5 minutes of scribe work, but it’s a keeper. Can’t hate on those sutures. Grüße, Daniel A. Uncle Siphuncle
And then there were the echinoids. Phymosoma texanum were the main draw, but therewere some Heteraster texanus around as well, to be expected in the Walnut. The “unwashed masses” below, plus a few after initial scrub (told my wife I used her toothbrush - mua ha ha!) Grüße, Daniel A. Wöhr aus Südtexas "To the motivated go the spoils." caldigger
It always seems the wives toothbrushes work far better than our own.
Tidgy's Dad
How could anyone resist those beautiful suture lines, even before prepping? And goodness what a lot of echinoids! Yes, wifey's toothbrush often comes in handy. Life's Good! Tortoise Friend.

Wrangellian
"Hate on"? Is that a Southernism? I like that one on matrix.. apparently you normally find them loose?

Wrangellian
Does it depend on the site, or are they normally loose wherever they occur (in that formation at least)?
Jeffrey P
Another amazing echinoid haul and I love the sutures on the Engonoceras. Congratulations on getting your wife out to collect with you. Looks like you both had a real good time.

Since most (but not all) Texas echinoids are found in soft marls, they separate readily from it. Grüße, Daniel A. Wöhr aus Südtexas "To the motivated go the spoils." erose
Good stuff. Here close to Austin the Walnut rarely gives up a decent complete ammonite. I know a bit further north they show up more frequently. Are you hunting south of me closer to home?

I don’t think I’ve been anywhere in the Walnut where intact ammonites were at all predictable. Just one a day is a prize in itself. For some reason, Engonoceras shows up whole way more frequently than Oxytropidoceras. I may only have one of the latter from the Walnut, and it may just be juvie whorls from a larger one.
