Walnut with Wife: Part Deux

Uncle Siphuncle

Recommended Posts

And so my wife and I found our way back into the field today after the rain played out.  The ground had turned to pig slop, but when chasing echinoids, I like it that way for enhanced contrast.  Any advantage these old eyes can get is worth exploiting.

This Phymosoma texanum was showing its good side for this photo. The other side was missing. No worries as we scored 9 high grade, perfect ones plus a score or more of high grade u-prep-m Heteraster texanus echs for gift or trade.

An Engonoceras ammonite, filthy in resplendent repose in a soft limestone block as plucked from the exposure.  I’ll circle back once this one is prepped...it could have spectacular sutures accented with marcasite.

A suite of Phymosoma and Heteraster echs flanked with a few gastropods and bivalves.  Detail will pop once prepped.

With flint flakes everywhere, we may have stumbled onto a quarry site near the end of our outing.

Yeah, I want to see some nicely prepped echinoids as well.

What a lot of lovely finds once again! :)

Your living room must be choc-a-bloc with unprepped echinoids and ammonites! ;)

Congratulations on having hit the echinoid jackpot again. Love to see that Engonoceras after it's prepped. You and your wife appear to be having a magnificent time.

Actually, I’m pretty close to being caught up with prep on the stuff I intend to keep.  My gifts and trades tend to involve unprepped material, for 2 reasons:

1. I don’t have liberties of time to prep what I give away, and

2.  I really prefer to make finds personally, but when I can’t, I prefer unprepped material in trade so I can at least feel some small measure of personal equity in the process that brought it from the strat column to the shelf.

Nice ammonites! I love the sutures. Do you ever find vertebrate material in the Walnut formation?

Didn't Clint Eastwood star in "A Fist Full of Echinoids"? Something with Sergio Leone....?

I forgot to mention that in all the excitement, one foot went down in a fire ant bed.  Good thing I picked up an ample supply of scratching implements!

I certainly did pick up a little bit of The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.  But these days I'm more of a Gran Torino kind of guy.  Now get off my grass!
