Found Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Where Cretaceous, Pliocene, and Pleistocene aged material can be found. I’m not sure what this is, at first I thought it was some kind of boring but it seems that is just because some of the ‘circles’ have fallen out. Any help greatly appreciated! Very small details so these photos were taken under a magnifying lense.

Worm tube colony?

That crossed my mind too, it’s different from examples I’ve seen and the worm tubes that I have but I won’t count it out. Thank you!

I think it is a non fossil "poppy" agate/jasper.

I can see some similarities, that’d be pretty neat too. Thank you

Looks like a bunch of barnacles were attached to a rock. Probably modern.

Except that some of the sphiricals can be seen under the surface.

tiny pelecypod coquina, I believe. Cool.

Looking at the scale, the little round objects are less than a millimeter. Reminds me of oolites. If so, this rock was transported from somewhere else.

The likeness is definitely persuading, how odd. Thank you

after enlarging and enhancing the photo I agree with oolites also

I wonder where it came from, it is very wave worn.

If it is agate it could have traveled a long distance.

If it oolitic limestone, not as far, but still quite a distance.

A simple hardness test will tell which it is. Agate will not scratch with a knife, calcite will.

If these are oolites, I think they have been replaced by chert. This piece has a quartz look to it.

That's oolitic chert.

It does not scratch with a knife, so chert I believe it is. Which must mean it came a ways, Thank you!

Interesting, if you have any articles or insights explaining the replacement process I would love to learn. I thought it had a chert like consistency. Thank you again
