I was wondering if anyone knew the identification of this fish, and if it is a  genuine fossil?

Knightia eocaena, Green River Formation.

Perfectly genuine - a rather nice example compared to some I have seen out there.

Not saying Tim is wrong, but I want people to be aware of the miscellaneous cenozoic fish that resemble Knightia:

I agree with our friend Tim :dinothumb:. It is a genuine fossil of Knightia eocaena bony fish, dated between the Eocene and Paleogene (approximately 50 Million years old). Green River Formation - Wyoming - United States. Congratulations, it's a beautiful fossil and worthy of any collection! By the way, before I forget, Knightia fish lived in the freshwater lakes and rivers of North America and Asia.

Is It real, or it's not real, that's the question!

Unfortunately not every fish that is a likely Knightia is possible to be accurately identified, even more so when all that is left out of the mouth is just the tail! :o

Just looking at the rock tells me Knightia.

I agree.  That is what I thought as well.

The matrix is unmistakably Green River Formation matrix.

Also, if you take into account how prevalent these are on the fossil market, Occam's razor comes into play. ;)

I've never seen much in the way of other Cenozoic fish for sale. At least, not in the price ranges I look at. :)

Ron, Occam's Razor is a problem solving principle. It states that when you have multiple possible answers to a problem, choose the one that makes the fewest assumptions. ;)

Ive been around for 60 years now and I have never heard of that.  I must be spending too much time under a rock?

No, just not reading Scholastic philosophy (13th-15th c.). Very arid and plodding stuff; you probably didn't miss too much. :P:D
