Last week I was on holiday in the Netherlands and found some nice things, especially shark teeth !

I was at the area of Antwerp, in Cadzand, in Vlissingen and at the Zandmotor near Den Haag.

In this topic I want to show my finds from my visit at the Zandmotor.

The Zandmotor is artificial peninsula, constructed as part of the Dutch coastal defense system. The sand originates from about 10 kilometers offshore, and contains bones of various land mammals from the Quaternary period.

On my visit I found some bone fragments, two shark teeth and some more things ....

Here are two pictures of the found location:

1.thumb.JPG.31cd1db71d07619fb0008773c11976ca.JPG

2.thumb.JPG.aae1899ca154ce12645eedc62e06609a.JPG

Firstly I want to show my best bone from there.

Its an 4 cm long Phalanx and I have no idea from which animal it comes from.

2.thumb.JPG.fa47f470d374ed03674032fd44250809.JPG

I hoped that I would find some more bones and maybe even a mammal tooth but maybe next time :)

Then secondly I was very happy about my two shark teeth I found because they seem to be very rare there.

Although they are quite worn ;)

The first one is 3 cm long:

1.thumb.JPG.9bf5f2e55b1a0dcbe34287a7bb6e0b7b.JPG

And the second one is 2 cm long and damaged on the other side:

1.thumb.JPG.aff1a12623fb3bfb45baab27f5fb69b9.JPG

Another very common find there are fish vertebrae. The ones I found:

1.thumb.JPG.0d88e2602ec9a97aa0d5ce2ce0cd9487.JPG

They are not big (the biggest one is 2.5 cm long)

Furthermore I found a beautiful tooth plate (?) of a fish: (3.6 cm long)

1.thumb.JPG.b251b17d0192d1c86778ddc46a1a9bd5.JPG

And last but not least two Pectenids:

Some more reports will follow (maybe in other threads...)

Hope you enjoyed my pictures and thanks for viewing !!!

Very cool finds, and great pictures Sebastian!

The shark teeth are indeed quite rare at the Zandmotor (definitely much more than at other locations), so finding two teeth, although incomplete, is still rather cool.

That mouth plate is really cool. Haven't found one like that yet on the Zandmotor.

In the last picture, the scallop on the right is an Eemian (Pleistocene; 120'000 yo) shell of the Mimachlamys varia.

The one on the left is insanely cool! I've never seen such a fantastic scallop come out of the Zandmotor. I am super envious! :envy: (I'll try and find out what species it is tomorrow)

I gotta say you did very well for a first time on the Zandmotor! Definitely better than my first time.

Did you pick up any more fossil shells?

Thanks for sharing this nice report.

Best regards,

Max

Are you sure it is a fish tooth plate ? I think it could be an osseous plate of reptile.

The ID for the shell on the left is Flexopecten flexosus. That’s a rare species, so congrats on the cool find! IPFOTM-worthy in my opinion :)

Yeah that’s an osteoderm of a Croc, Gator, or Sturgeon.

I agree with Coco, that's not a mouth plate, looks like a reptilian osteoderm to me. :)

Lovely finds, the bivalves are wonderful and the phalanx very interesting.

I don't think that any reptile fossils are to be found in the Zandmotor. Reptiles are pretty much always found in warm places; yet the vertebrate fossils from this location are all from megafaunal Pleistocene mammals from the last Ice Age, about 40'000 years old. And at the time, I think that it was WAAYYY to cold for any reptile to be scurrying around. So I think that sturgeon is a much better guess for that osteoderm.

I also like them !

Here are some of my others:

They are mostly from the Massvlakte near Rotterdam. Max was so nice to determine them for me ! His knowledge about  bivalves is really awesome :)

I will sort it as an osteoderm of a sturgeon.
