Genuine turtle?

Recommended Posts

This is said to be a pyritized Anosteira maomingensis from Guangdong of China.  Is it genuine?

I am kind of hoping it's not real looks like if it is an angle grinder was used to prep it :(

It's a real mess.

I can't see any of the peripheral osteoderms at all, this just seems to be mashed pleurals and neurals.

It's the right shape but so much detail is missing I can't work out if the structure less most of the peripherals is correct.

It could be real, but if so it's a bad example.

Pass.

Well we've seen some of those "butcher" jobs on the reptiles that Crazyhen has posted before.

Yes I might add crazyhen is only asking about pieces offered to him, and by god would he never do prep work like this or endorse it, and from my observations and conversations is just asking to get an opinion on real or not. Again given the condition of prep and the fact it almost looks polished could this have originated from Madagascar ?

Is pyritized fossil turtle rare?

I really have no idea to be honest, i would imagine pretty rare.

I would definitely take the first one (much more natural looking) over that "bronze" thing that has been polished.

And yes, I know you are not the mangler of the other hack jobs. Just stating that you were the one that was showing them to us.

Without professional techniques and tools, it is really sad to see that many of the precious fossils are badly prepped and the values of the fossils are ruined.  And what's more, some of the fossils such as the spectacular and rare notosaurs from Guizhou, were not only badly prepped but also crafted and turned into an "art work".

The last pic looks like "Gamera", can "Godzilla" be far behind?

I don't believe either of these are Sinemys gamera (an actual species)

Looks best out of the three, but still need proper pictures.

Looking forward to meeting my fellow Singaporean collectors! Do PM me if you are a Singaporean, or an overseas fossil-collector coming here for a holiday!

Yes, I agree with you, Andy.  This one has a more complete shell but it's not "pyritized" as the other two specimens.  I find it interesting that the turtle fossil, if genuine, is pyritized, and mineralized to such extent.  It's amazing.

2nd one looks to be real.  1st and 3rd ones, if real, have been destroyed by some very bad prep!!!

I agree.

Furthermore, keep in mind that there's possibility that it could be destroyed by the decay of the pyrite....
