Mazon Creek Fish ( Elonichthys peltigerus?)

I just wanted to post something that is not very pretty but is something thing that is harder to find now in the Mazon Creek Fauna- a fish, possibly Elonichthys peltigerus.

I posted it earlier in an on going post titled “ Sometimes You Have To Whack It”, in that thread, I daily posts fossils (Mazon Creek)  that I have opened that day. Today I opened a concretion that has been sitting in one of my buckets for the last 15 years. A slight strike of my hammer did some real damage to this concretion which shattered upon impact. I put together the pieces that I could and was still happy with the results. The shattering does not normally happen, but some of the time you get a concretion that will do just that.

Hopefully tomorrow I will have better luck, as I will continue to use my hammer.

That's a really cool fish - congrats! I actually think it could be a good contender for the FOTM contest :)  I'm sure you'll find more cool Mazon Creek fossils in the future. Thanks for the report :)

Opalised fossils are the best: a wonderful mix between paleontology and mineralogy!

Q. Where do dinosaurs study?

Very nice!  I have at least dozen, or so, five gallon buckets worth of nods in my garage that have been out there for several years now.  Your fish gives me hope!  The only fish I ever found I destroyed with a hammer.  Thus, I bought a deep freezer. :)

I agree. I especially think that the scales show up nicely.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Unfortunately it is one of the hazards when collecting Mazon Creek fossils.

You cannot save them all.

I know how frustrating it is to find something nice/rare only to explode into tiny bits.

Luckily you were able to recover a good chunk.

Beautiful preservation.

Thanks and yes it is a pain when that happens. Do you agree with my ID?

I can say that I've whacked a few nodules in my day. Thankfully, (I guess) I've never had something this cool inside any of my nodules.

That moment must have been the joy of victory and the agony of defeat all in one brief instant.

Cool looking fish, though.

Cheers.
