Clam that is heavy

Recommended Posts

I recently received a fossilized clam that is shut tight.

The clam seems heavier than I think it should be.

Does it hurt the 'value' of the fossil if I ply it open?

I saw online how some clams are crystallized.

That is the internal mold of the bivalve.

Prying it apart would reveal nothing and would damage the specimen.

I would leave it as it is.

Looks to me to be a steinkern, the inner empty space of a "clam" that filled with sediment. The outer shell has dissolved away. So to have a crystalline interior, a shell must be present. Do not pry open or it will destroy what you have.

We're all friends here.

Often we agree, sometimes we don't, but it's always respectful and good-humoured.
