A colony of oysters

Recommended Posts

I had some time to kill again yesterday in the middle of my split shift, so I headed off as usual to the upper Danube valley. Problem was, as I was already halfway there, I noticed that I'd forgotten to throw my tools into the car. What a bummer! Oh well, I thought, might as well just check out the ditches in the area on the chance that something might have fallen down. I can always bang rocks together if need be, and at least I can enjoy the good weather for a couple of hours. As luck would have it, there actually was a small rock fall in one of the ditches, so I managed to retrieve a couple of things. One was an Orthoceras proincondita ammonite and the other a nice multiblock with a couple of ammonites plus a colony of Liostrea roemeri  oysters with 7 complete valves and lots of bits and pieces.

Nice finds!

And I had to smash a big rock to get it out, so you're right about that :P

Excellent finds Roger, especially considering you collected them without the benefit of tools. That speaks to the rich abundance at these sites and your skills and ingenuity as a collector. Big congratulations.

A fine and photogenic oyster assemblage, they're too often unappreciated. :)

Thanks guys. I thought that something interesting could be under that matrix, and now that I've got it cleaned up, I'm quite pleased with it.

Is that a coprolite hat you've got on now? Reminds me of GeschWhat's avatar.

Well done, and made even more so by the fact that it was a serendipitous find between shifts without tools. Is that another ammonite species in the oyster block?

Thanks Kane. The larger one is an Orthoceras and there are also 2 tiny Glochicerae snuggled in at the bottom of the second photo.

It is easy to imagine that you have never had a bad day in your life.  What passion!  If there were no rocks to bang together I am sure that you would simply use your teeth.  I salute you.

Well, I must admit that I have also had my share of unsuccessful hunts, but I enjoyed most of them nevertheless. I lost all of my original teeth a few years ago, but the ones I have now are quite a bit sturdier, so who knows? At least I don't lick fossils like Skippy. Yuck!!

Beautiful.  I have an affinity for taxa that don't fall under the category of what one might call "charismatic palaeofauna" (can I get an "amen", Adam @Tidgy's Dad?).  If properly prepped they can be stunning, as you have exhibited here :envy:

I can imagine that any serious collecor is just as interested in the beifauna as he is in the main ingredients, especially when they present themselves in such a fashion that can be embellished by prepping.
