I made two trips to Little Falls NY recently, one alone, and one with my 10 year old that I took to Penn-Dixie last year. Both trips were successful. The fossils are abundant, relatively easy to find and extract, and the site is kid-friendly. It is slippery on the slimy shale in the water, so be careful.

The shale can be sharp and cuts fingers easily if you use ungloved hands to brush bits away from a site you are excavating. The shale is also very oily, can will stain fingernails, so consider gloves with covered fingers. Rare pyritized fossils can be found. I also found two cephalopods.20180527_162923.thumb.jpg.b587cc9656208d2f6856de61ff71a4e0.jpg20180527_162909.thumb.jpg.29c7edaf6f66d520526124bc0bf2553d.jpg

Lots of graptolites also. There's one right below the larger of the two cephalons.

Any experienced fossil air tool preppers:

Can the head on the right be prepped out and somehow recovered to the body on the left? I think the rest of the cephalon is part of the left portion of this split.

Hey Dr. Dave,

The first one probably is a molt, ... so I don't think it will prep out.

The second one with the counterpart could be glued back together, and then prepped out from the top.

Neat finds. :)

Regards,

Congratulations Dave. Those are some good finds from that site. Practically all of the trilobite remains you find there are molts, but they certainly are abundant and look really cool.

As Tim suggests, glue them back together and prep from the top. Fluid super glue is best. If you possess an air abrader, then I would recommend using that at medium pressure if the matrix allows. Otherwise approach it carefully with an air scribe.

Hello there!

Viola and I missed seeing you and your daughter at Penn Dixie's "Dig with the Experts" this year - perhaps you'll make it out next year...

Wonderful finds, by the way!!!  Those two cephalons kind of represent you and your daughter - two fossil hunters, hunting together :)

Congratulations, and best of luck with the prep work

Nice pics ... the positive and negative can definitely be put back together and then prepped down from the top. However the cost of getting someone to do this for you is probably not worth doing on this type of fossil both because of the state of preservation and commonality

Congratulations. Nice representative finds from an excellent site. Haven't been there in 3-4 years. Glad to see it is still accessible and producing.
