Chunky Kem Kem Theropod Tooth

Hey folks,

 

Thought I'd run it by the forum experts as to whether you agree with the Carcharodontosaurid label for my new acquisition (which it was sold as)?

 

Locality is the usual Kem Kem beds, Morocco.

 

Serration density-

Mesial: 10/5mm

Distal: 9/5mm

 

Distal serrations run to the base, while the mesial serrations end about 3/4 of the way down the carinae.

 

It's a chunky little thing, but I gather Carch teeth can occasionally be on the more robust side....but I'll let you judge:

It looks like Charcharodontosaurid. The base looks very round, but I believe this would make this tooth a premaxillary, meaning it would be in the front of the animals jaw. But I'm now expert so let others give their opinions.

Thanks Bone Guy! I couldn't remember where in the mouth thicker Carch teeth would be found, but you're probably right.  I've looked over the table for Kem Kem teeth made by @Troodon, but can't decide on which example mine is closest to.

I'm not great on teeth, but I think the id is likely correct. 

I miss Wales, sometimes. 

But not the weather!

I don't see what is wrong with the weather in Wales. I lived there for three years and you could always rely on the weather, it was remarkably constant and never too hot.

Thanks!  Haha yeah, it's a pretty wonderful place, but we do get a ridiculous amount of rain.

 

Saying that, the weather has by-and-large been great the last few weeks....probably not a patch on what you have in Morocco though!

We are famed for the rain (and sheep) though. 

It rains so, so much! 

And it's often bitterly cold. 

Summer lasts for about 6 hours. 

It never gets above 40°, not ever.

Yup!

 

Recently it's been on average between 18-20°c most days (and dry), which is super out of the ordinary. Probably the first real taste of summer we've had since 2015 or 16.

 

Fossil hunts here feel strange if there's no mud involved.

I feel more comfortable above 40°C. 

Below 30 is not warm enough for me.

Wow... Seems like Tidgy's reptilian temperature needs rubbed off on you!!!  

 

But seriously, above 30 degrees is too warm for me. Yesterday, while doing my exam, it was about 25 degrees in the room and I was sweating like someone who had just done a full triathlon. My ideal temperature is 15 degrees. Just right for fossil hunting!

I think this is from a large bodied abelsauridae.

I'm leaning against this being a Carcharodontosaurid or abessaurid tooth.  The denticles do not match other anterior teeth I've seen and the mesial carina should extend to the base.   Looks more like an anterior tooth of what I call morph type 3.  Theropod indet.

Isolated teeth from the Kem Kem  are a difficult call.

Thanks Troodon! I know you have a lot more experience with tooth morphology than most. That table of yours is a fantastic reference guide to theropods from this formation.

 

That's what I love about the Kem Kem; there's just so much we still have to discover about life there.

I must say it does look a little weird. But I would nonetheless lean towards Carcharodontosaurid.

Since I was messing around with my camera, I decided to update this old thread with a few extra pics of this weirdo Carch/unknown tooth.

 

It's still weird and still a favourite of mine.

Those closeup of the serrations look identical to other Carcharodontosaurids teeth I have.  So Im leaning that way and still an anterior dentary tooth.

Cheers, Troodon! I've got it labelled as Carcharodontosaurid indet, so that's good to know.

 

Hopefully the photos can be a good comparison for anyone with similar Carch teeth in future, since I haven't seen many like this one around.
