Erbi1421
I am new to this group and would like to say hello and ask for some help. I started walking the beach and collecting sharks teeth and shells. I have acquired more than a thousand teeth in the last 3 or 4 months. I have not a clue what tooth belongs to which shark! Any help please and I will start posting my weekend finds! This is a photo of a few out of my collection.. Thank you! caldigger
Perhaps if you could put a number next to each tooth, otherwise it may get rather confusing trying to ID each without reference as to which is being discussed. And please have picture in full light. It is difficult to see in the shadows.
Tidgy's Dad
Hello, and a very warm welcome to TFF from Morocco. I know very little about these, but some of those look great. Life's Good! Tortoise Friend.
ynot
Welcome to TFF! You have several types of shark teeth. I see Sand tiger, tiger, white, lemon and bull or dusky in the mix. http://elasmo.com/ and http://naka.na.coocan.jp/ are good sites for information about shark teeth. If You are searching for an ID good clear pictures if the teeth are needed. A group shot like the one provided are difficult to reply to. You should also make Your thread in the "fossil ID" subforum. 1 Darwin said: " Man sprang from monkeys." Will Rogers said: " Some of them didn't spring far enough." Macrophyseter
Welcome to the forum Eribi! Here's my list on what I think the IDs would be. Keep in mind that some of the IDs may be wrong. Note: Cosmopolitodus is disputed genera, with Carcharodon being another commonly used genus being argued on. 1. Carcharodon carcharias 2. ? 3. Carcharhinus leucas 4. Cosmopolitodus hastalis 5. Carcharhinus sp. 6. Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos? 7. Carcharias cupsidata 8. Isurus oxyrinchus 9. Weltonia? 10. Carcharhinus sp. 11. Hemipristis serra 12. Carcharhinus leucas 13. Carcharodon carcharias 14. Galeocedro cuvier 15. Carcharhinus leucas 16. Carcharhinus leucas 17. Hemipristis serra 1 If you're a fossil nut from Palos Verdes, San Pedro, Redondo Beach, or Torrance, feel free to shoot me a PM!

I do not think that it is a good idea to correct someone regarding a taxon that is still in dispute. There is no full consensus on whether or not hastalis should be fully assimilated into Carcharodon, as the situation regarding it is still very much debatable. Nevertheless, Cosmopolitodus is still widely used in scientific papers post Ehert et al. (2012). I don't want to pull up a debate on this right now, but please don't correct someone who used a taxon that is currently in dispute and debated. 1 If you're a fossil nut from Palos Verdes, San Pedro, Redondo Beach, or Torrance, feel free to shoot me a PM! Coco
As this species is still in dispute, best would have been to put directly both names ! Why in this case to favor a name rather than an other one ? Don't recriminate anybody who completes an information ! And everybody has the right to express his opinion, thank you for respecting him and of not feeling you attacked ! A little of humility, young boy ! Coco
These teeth are worn out (probably rolled by the effect of water), and the genus Carcharhinus is the one which contains most recent species (more than 30), then I think it is almost impossible to give a species name to worn out fossil Carcharhinus, especially as regards the lower teeth... Sorry for that. As Coco wisely stated, when names are disputed, it is best to include both, even if one is mentioned as a possible name. Science is always up for debate, and while I agree it may have come across as brusque, he was only trying to help. Still being undetermined, it is good to get in the habit of using both, I think. 1 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks."
