Fruitbat
I agree...it certainly does look like a trapdoor spider (which is a mygalomorph spider like the classic 'tarantulas'). I haven't seen many of those in this area of Texas. -Joe Illigitimati non carborundum Fruitbat's PDF Library

I have seen turantulas when I lived in McKinney, TX and had built a new house. When I was younger we saw them quite often when we were dove hunting at dusk walking across the dirt roads. Don’t see many anymore.
Fruitbat
No...I used to see them all the time here in the Dallas area too...but since the arrival of fire ants and the widespread use of pesticides, their populations seem to have dropped dramatically. Same with horned lizards...at least around here. -Joe Illigitimati non carborundum Fruitbat's PDF Library

Now...I have a question...are those wild ferns in the background in the first picture? Love the tarantula! It looks like it just moulted. -Joe Those look like locus saplings rather than ferns to me. That was my 1st thought, then I remembered those small mimosa plants that close up their leaves when you touch them. I forget how to tell them apart.
