That last photo is of a receptaculitid, I think - nice find!

Monica,

Just as an aside, all Ordovician Receptaculites are now classified as Fisherites;)

I'd heard that before, but I didn't want to commit to too specific an identification, so I decided to go with a broad one :P

Your finds look identical in type and color to the finds in our SE corner of Minnesota!! I notice that a few of your maclurites are pictured with the back side (ugly domed side) showing. I usually can expose the front side nicer side) with a chisel and a hammer since the front side is so flat . Also, is that a crystalized cephalopod?? Many of our cephs crystalize.

Yes - I think that is the case - Fisherites and Receptaculites are both part of the same family (Receptaculitidae).

thanks for the info everyone

yeah the larger one still attaced to the matrix seems like it is just barely holding on

there is a crack all the way around it

i kept it as is just because i did not have any others like it

i guess i should be on the look out for one with a diameter of 26 cm or more eh!

anything else of interest i should keep an eye out for?

Too bad you can't get that whole chunk out, with the orthocone and all, but it looks like it would be a bit of a job and would probably fall apart in the process.
