John Dempster Posted June 22, 2018 Share Posted June 22, 2018 Hi Fossil Forum community, I am a complete neophyte is this field so was hoping to get some insights from you. On a recent walking trip in the mountain region in the north east of Mallorca I came across this curiously shaped rock. It was located in a dry riverbed in a canyon close to the town of Binibona. I thought from the shape it could be a tooth of some type but considering the quality of other fossils I’ve seen it would be poorly preserved if it were. Dimensions of the find (at its widest points) are: Height - 15 cm Width - 13 cm Depth - 7 cm. Hopefully this is enough detail and somebody can bring some clarity to this and I’m not wasting your time with a coincidentally shaped piece of sandstones and my own personal pareidolia. Troodon Posted June 22, 2018 Share Posted June 22, 2018 Welcome to the forum I think it needs some cleaning to remove the encrusted areas to determine what it is. Your first image has what appears to be the root lobes and overall shape of a megalodon tooth. Additional cleaning can support that ID or find out its a tooth shaped rock. While I agree that it is generally/roughly tooth-like in shape, the appearance ( lack of defined root, lack of enamel, and lack of symmetry) suggests otherwise. Unfortunately, I believe that this is a suggestively shaped rock. Next stage seems to suggest a thorough cleaning to bring a definitive ID. Any suggestions on the best way to wash a rock or am I just being super dim here.
