Aloha.

here are two 3d printed models I showed before.

The Turtle is selfmade, the Spino not so.

I took the time to paint them and quite like the result.

Pondered to give the Spino the reddish colour one often sees with fossils from kem kem, but decided rather to colour the "matrix", which is in fact a piece of treebark.

Best regards,

Jan

Really beautiful work Jan!  Your attention to detail is great.

What is your base mount for the turtle?

Thanks Caldigger,

The turtle used to acompany my whales on their peace of bark, but after painting it I desided it would better fit with its fellow marine reptiles. The Mosasaur and Plesiosaur are commercially bought models which I altered quite a bit. The pliosaur skull is purely handmade.

The bases are a tuna vertebra for the Mosa and a fragment of mammalian bone, both beachfinds from the last holiday.

Cheers

J

Thanks Ynot!

I just got an early christmas present from the 3d-printers (although I had to pay for it)

Thats how it looks before painting.

I will post more detailed pictures of the single model when they are completed.

Here is the front part of the edmontonia from animalsimulation.org.

I am surprised how well my connections between the scutes came out in the 3d print.

Painted it. the caudal part with all the little scutes may be unprintable, or at least a lot of work.

Aloha!

I got some mail, and I have time again after my exams.

Not much to improve on these two.

Deinocheirus, I think it is perfect as it is, just some nice paint to add.

The T-Rex will need some finetuning, and I wonder how easily the resin will bend when heated in Water  (I read that is possible).

Greetings

J

Painted and assembled.

I like the look, but somehow i miss the challenge of creating something of my own.

Anyway, i couldn´t have made it like that.

Yes, i also like the look very much.

Although the assembly was rather to easy to be a challenge. The only merit I have in this beauty is painting it.

i think you cn find the model when you search for Deinocheirus 1/20 scale.

Aloha.

Some synapsids, not to scale.

As i only painted them, they go in this thread

The Dimetrodon file I bought via turbosquid, it´s by Zhenya 85. Printed well with only minor damage to the tiny toes.

The smilodon is a free model by Geolab via Sketchfab.

Thylacoleo is free from Phenome10k. removed the christmas hat by hand.

Dog and Baboon are scanned by me.

What do you think?

Thanks Kane!

As all my synapsids went here and colour will be involved,

Here comes my take on Thylacoleo. Cranium is from Phenome 10 k, Mandible digitally skulpted by me, postcranium is "Smilodon" from clementoni.

First of all I lengthened the legs, that would have been necessary even if I  kept it a Smilodon. Thumbs, Pelvis and scapulae still have to be "thylacolized", but the overall silluette seems to be OK.

Aloha

WOW!! You've got a lower jaw!!!! Please let me know when you've got it done and posted. I'd really like to add it to my own print.

BTW I replied to your post on my sculpt; sorry for the overlong wait.

It looks like you've done a fantastic job! well-done! Don't forget the tail looked kind of bendy towards the body and stiffer farther back. When the researchers studied that one complete tail, they realized Leo could tripod back on his tail and his feet, like a kangaroo. However, since your Leo seems to be walking rather than leaning up and "boxing" (or whatever 'roos do to fight), what you've done seems to be fine.

Keep up the great work! ^_^

PS (LOL) I was about to mention the phenome10K "Holiday" Leo on my post. Wouldn't you know, after 2 years of working on my own Leo skull, I logged onto their site and printed another (more complete) version in a single day. Kinda ironic, idnit? ^_-

Hi Douglas,

thanks for your feedback on the tail and postcranium, and glad you like it!

My mandible is ready as far as I am concerned, it was sculpted in Blender after a drawing from this source:

"Additional Evidence of the Affinities of the Extinct Marsupial Quadruped Thylacoleo carnifex

Richard Owen".

Its a 4 mb stl.

About scanning, printing and sculpting:

I am a kind of opportunistic feeder regarding my models. I decide to build this Criter or that, and then I look what sources i can find. Or the other way round.

Either a cheap toy like the smilodon that saves me the work to build al the tiny ribs myself (or the cost of having them printed), a free 3d scan (the Dimetrodon I bought)

Most of my whales have printed skulls from real scans, but Aetiocetus, Remingtonocetus and Janjucetus I sculpted from recent whale scans using reference pics like with this mandible.

Blender is really a great free program for that kind of thing.

I pondered 3d scanners for some while, but as far as I understood the ones that work well are still really really expensive.

Photogrammetry on the other hand is a great way to obtain 3d scans from multiple fotographs, I did that for my spermwhale cranium.

Building things by hand is much more fun in my opinion, but of course 3d prints, especially of high quality scans, do have much more detail than at least I can sculpt by hand.

So most of my models are chimaeras with parts made of wood, wire, milliput, plastic toys and nylon 3d prints of own or free 3d models.

That means in most cases I wouldn´t know if I could  sell them if I wanted to, because they are only partially my work.

Anyway I would have to sell a lot of them to afford a good 3d-scanner.

Next project will be a Pelagornis (and Placodus, but that will take some time due to the amount of ribs)

Again some ready bought models from shapeways to paint.

I took Kanes advice to heart and added some trilobites to my collection, Walliserops and Harpes.

Although I lack the skill to model these myself, the money to buy originals and the location to find them. Painting will be fun.

Very cool! I’m looking forward to seeing these in “living colour.” :)

Hmm- living colour, that´s an idea. Completely speculative as far as I know, but as many had the best eyes of their time, they probably wherent grey.

Harpes is not the best candidate concerning their eyesight though.

I will have a look at some crustaceans.

Aloha,

J

first layer has dried, looking really good ^^...

not really, but I am confident.

I decided to paint the Walli fossil style, not sure about the Harpes yet.

Some paint added.

Thats the basis, now that is completely dried I can start to add detail, the eyes will be challenging as the 3d-print doesn´t transmit their structure.

Ok,

I am quite happy with the result of my painting.

Although the Eyes look ok from far, looking at the closeup picture I think I should do them again and really concentrate on getting the geometry of the rows right.

That is the reason i didn´t dare to try trilobite models until now, their beauty lies more in the intricate detail than in the pure proportions as with vertebrate skeletons (of course vertebrates have their intricate beauty to, but I never tried to catch that in my small scale models)

Here is another ic for the overall impression:

Ahoi.

My referencing of recent crustaceans only told me one thing: anything goes.

Here are some beach finds and one painted 3d print, ID as far as I could find it:

left: Gecarcinus sp. ,Landcrab, Costa Rica

middle: Harpes 3dprintus

bottom: Carcinus maenas, common littoral crab, Portugal

right: Calappa granulata, Greece

top right: may be juvenile Panulirus guttatus, Costa Rica
