Rugose Coral?

DocLiv

Recommended Posts

I found this interesting piece of rock while hiking in the Snake River Canyon NE of Alpine, Wyoming. My first thought was it might be a coral so I looked at images of fossilized corals and it most closely resembled Rugose Coral from the Devonian. Please check out the photos and let me know what you think. Thanks!

Actinostromatida, it looks exactly like a rock I own. Reef limestone out of actinostromatida with rugosa. Also devonian, but from Germany.

I have several examples of stramatoporoid entombed rugose corals myself.

The post doesn't look like them to me either. :)

The shadow directly surrounding the corals looks like it could be if that is what you mean.

Stromatoporoids and stromatolites always confuse me!!!!!! But I do know stroma means layers and anytime I find one of these, the layering is obvious. @PMA, where do you see the layering that makes stromatoporoid likely?

The layering isn't always preserved, but in some cases it can reasonably be assumed from context.

It works when you don't need to be positive anyway. :)

Mh, on the phone it looked like a pore-like structure but not now. I guess it's just packed with rugosas.
