I concur:

This example shows a 'positive' alligator pattern, where yours has a negative one. Both form under a similar process.

The craquelure texture seems superficial, which might suggest something like paint or some other substance. Perhaps it is a piece of human-made debris that might have once been set on fire?

Thanks for the side shot.

In My opinion it is a piece of carbonized (burnt) leather.
